Rusty Dinosaur Bones Await Discovery

Dinosaur head created out of metal in the sand of the Jetty. [Creation and Image by Dan McCauley]

A budding paleontologist loping through the fog on one of the jetties that fling up barriers to the Pacific Ocean to the west of Humboldt Bay might stumble on this dinosaur.

A Full dinosaur skeleton

A clue to where the skeleton’s rusty bones are planted…

The rusty bones were created by Dan the Metal Man (Dan McCauley, a local artist.) “Just hanging at the jetty getting inspired for artwork and ran across metal debris that looked a lot like fossilized dinosaur bone,” he told us. “So being the guy I am…I decided to spend a little time to create something from ground scores!”

He hopes people enjoy his sculpture when they discover it. “Actually [I] hope people freak when they see it until they realize it’s just rusty metal,” he added.

McCauley’s motto could be, “Use what’s discarded by others to create something enjoyable for many.” He is behind the large animal sculpture installations made from other people’s trash in Rio Dell.

This coming weekend, McCauley is having the grand opening of his gallery space. The Thrive Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday from Noon til five, 474 Redmond Rd., Eureka.

By all means folks, wander out among the jetties and look for cool stuff to stimulate your artistic juices. Keep the ocean behind you – it’ll tend to itself – while you are fully engrossed in your new pastime treasure hunt.
While Dan McCauley means well and has creative talent the rest of us shlubs can only envy, perhaps not a good idea to encourage emulation anywhere near the jetties? Just sayin’

Us shlubs have been beach combing since a caveman found his first dead fish washed up. No amount of sarcasm will stem the tide.

I miss the driftwood sculptures that were along the bay just before Eureka on 101

Apparently ‘disruptive to birds or land managers’ or so…
and then they tore down the shack at Jacoby Creek…
and then they burned the Jupiter Dredge.

Too bad dinosaurs are fake and just another scam perpetrated by freemasons.

Aw, shucks, you beat me to it! I was going to post a comment to the same effect, only in a more sarcastic tone. It kind of looks as if you’re for real, though, which is alarming. Come on, fossilized dinosaur bones a hoax perpetrated by Freemasons? Really?

There ya go. Makes more sense, when you think about it, than what that other guy put here. Serious stuff.

That’s one thing Rio Dell really did right- Dan McCauley’s sculptures. Nice!
