Vegetation Fire Near McKinleyville; Onramp Closed

vegetation fire icon featureA vegetation fire which began around 11:40 p.m. near the North Bank Road entrance to Hwy 101 near McKinleyville has closed the southbound onramp, according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

Please avoid the area if possible.

The Incident Commander reports that the road closure could be extended as there are issues accessing the fire.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE: The road is no longer closed and we believe we heard firefighters state that the fire was under control but the transmission was scratchy.

🕯🌳Please be reminded not throw out cigarettes butts or roaches because Smoky the Bear says both can cause forest fires.

Bumdom used to be circumspect. They hid away from the authorities, kept close to sources of drugs and/or alcohol. They sort of formed a compact with the rest of society that they would keep their crimes small and localized if society pretty much left them alone there.

Now every exit off the freeway or major road has small clusters of tents and trash. There was at one point a job market for the barely hanging on people where sporadic work could be had to provide some stability. They could pump gas, sweep in front of stores, unload goods, wash cars, etc, earning enough for very cheap housing and a vice or two. But now, even that much connection with general society is gone. Drug selling and related hustled have replaced it, forming a closed alternate society toxic to people outside of it.

Yep its a bummer for the true hobos&travelers “in the road” style these days. In general if someone ive never seen around before is playing music on an instrument on a corner in town, ill throw a buck or so in their instrument case.
I travelled in a group around the country working festival booths&was taught to never ever hang out in a town longer than needed. Get groceries, supplies&a few meals out then head out to camp in whatever national forest was nearby. Long time true travelers are not into sitting and begging, hobos were the migrant workers of their time, they worked for you in xchange for room&board for a few days or week. They didnt show up&say feed me bcuz im so cool while i drink&lay around.

Lots of trailers on the road right now so please watch for sparks!!! & no cigs out the window!! If you see glass on the ground pick it up it can act like a magnifying glass and start fire.
