The following is a press release from Humboldt County’s Natural Resource Planning

County of Humboldt Seeks Southern Humboldt Prescribed Fire Liaison

Beginning this summer, the County of Humboldt, on behalf of the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council, will be partnering with the University of California (UC) Cooperative Extension and Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association to increase the use and acceptance of prescribed fire throughout the county. The Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association (HCPBA) is a collaboration between UC Cooperative Extension, private landowners, volunteer fire departments, local non-governmental organizations, and federal and state agency partners, that seeks to increase prescribed fire on private lands as a core part of their mission. Since its inception in 2017, the HCPBA has safely burned hundreds of acres of private land. Now the County seeks to support this work using grant funds awarded by the California Fire Safe Council for this purpose. While the scope of the project is countywide, Southern Humboldt—given its high fire risk and dispersed population—will receive additional support with the help of a Southern Humboldt Prescribed Fire Liaison. A Request for Proposals is open until May 27, 2019 for this limited-term, contracted position. The successful applicant will provide outreach and education services regarding the benefits and the mechanics of prescribed fire. The primary responsibility of the Liaison will be to serve as a link between local volunteer fire departments, landowners, the County of Humboldt, the Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association, and UC Cooperative Extension. The position is expected to begin in June 2019 and continue through October 2020.

The goals of this project are reflected in the Restoration of Beneficial Fire Action Plan, recently published in the 2019 update to the Humboldt County Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Sounds good to me. I’ve always wondered why our tax dollars are spent on clipboards instead of on actual hands on help. I’d love to see dedicated companies and 1% loan options for rural land owners to take advantage of when they can afford it. The clipboard method doesn’t help anyone except the clipboard industry, imo. Even the city dwellers are affected by the refugees, smoke, and dark skies. (can’t grow food in dark sky conditions).

Misspent tax dollars will be the downfall of us all.
