Cardiologist Pleads Guilty to Shooting Neighbor’s Dogs in Potter Valley

This is a press release from the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office.

Benjamin Hanna Meyer,

Benjamin Hanna Meyer,

With potential jurors gathering in the basement of the Ukiah courthouse in response to jury summons, upstairs on the top floor of the building a Ukiah cardiologist waived his right to the jury trial that was to begin Monday morning (April 22) and withdrew his earlier not guilty pleas and denials in a dog killing case.

Defendant Benjamin Hanna Meyer, age 67, of Potter Valley, entered guilty pleas to two separate counts of unlawfully and maliciously killing one of his neighbor’s dogs, and unlawfully and maliciously maiming another, both counts as felonies. The defendant also admitted that he personally used a firearm in the commission of the attack.

The dogs were shot just outside the neighbor’s residence while both dogs were confined in their separate doghouses inside locked pens. While nobody witnessed it and there was no physical evidence of any involvement by the dogs, the defendant had claimed he thought it possible that the dogs had somehow contributed to the death of his horse found earlier trapped in a cattle guard on the neighbor’s property.

Dr. Meyer was ordered to return to court for formal sentencing at 9 a.m. June 12 in Department H of the Ukiah courthouse.

The prosecutor who has been handling this matter and prepared the case for trial is Assistant District Attorney Dale P. Trigg. The investigating law enforcement agencies were the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s own investigators.

Mendocino County Superior Court Judge John Behnke accepted the defendant’s guilty pleas and the firearm use. Judge Behnke will be the sentencing judge.

I would reserve judgement. While it seems reprehensible to shoot dogs in kennels, I personally think it’s reprehensible to keep dogs in kennels and now that I think about it, kennel raised dogs are just the type that might get out and Chase a neighbor’s horse to it’s death. Hmm..
I’ve used the kennel to house train 8-12 week old puppies but in my experience, if you spend time with and train your dogs properly, they don’t get into this kinda trouble…
Sad really, for everyone…☹️

Ah, a heartless heart specialist
Irony
As I suspect he will get no jail time, but a fine & community service, 1000 hours at the humane society seems like a good fit.

If the dogs often ran loose and chased his horse (or livestock) to its death, that has been a permissible reason for shooting a neighbor’s dog In rural areas. Most people warn the neighbors if the canines are causing trouble. But I have no idea if what the details of this case are.

If the dogs were on his property and he shot them there, he wouldn’t have faced any charges. He went to the neighbor’s home and shot the dogs. That doesn’t fly under any circumstance.

the horse somehow wandered on to the neighbor’s property – why wasn’t it secured?

In animal law cases, the responsibility usually falls on the owner whose animal escaped their property.

yep he messed up. he would be fine if he had waited to shoot the dogs till they were chasing another one of his horses on his property though. folks need to keep their dogs on their own property and under control. your right to own a dog or as so many call them a fur baby doesnt give anyone the right to allow that to jarm or harass another.

If people would fix their dogs this wouldn’t happen. I shot three dogs this winter trying to fight my dogs, 50lb. Staffordshire and 75lb rott mix witch could take care of themselves but why should they. Fix your fucking dogs and this shit would not happen

This man.
Is a great doctor and has save many lives in my area.
He went fishing with me hundreds of times.
And he didn’t even want to kill a couple fish to take home to eat.
He would turn most of them loose.
I believe there’s Very good reason for what happened. I would love also to hear his side.
One of the most Gentle humane human beings I’ve ever known. I knew him for over 20 years. Shorewish I could
Have there to have his back.
Love you doctor BEN Meyer. From You’re old fishing Buddy Jay Carmen.

Probably some problem dogs anyways. Neighbors probably told him to fuck off after the dogs chased his horse into a cattle guard and killed it. I’d shoot the dogs too. Hope he only gets a misdemeanor. 👍

This is so sad. Dr. Meyer is my cardiologist and I love the man. I can see how someone might snap after seeing their beloved horse obviously having died a horrible slow death, especially if there is some history with those dogs running loose. I’ve known people on both sides of this kind of scenario. We have dogs that sometimes run off, and we’ve also lost livestock to other roaming dogs. It’s a tough situation. I hope real justice will be served.

His response was wrong, a mistake in judgement in response to a situation that he was likely a victim of!
For people to comment in such a negative way is nothing less than pittiful ignorance. I have two dogs that I love dearly and if someone hurt them I would likely respond with stupidity. A love for a horse to some isn’t anything less than love for a dog. He made a mistake people, hes human! If a father of a child shot a rapist of that child in his sleep would you defend the rapist? I dont think this man just wondered over to the neighbors and randomly shot the neighbors dogs because he felt like it. Maybe he felt the need to take the life of a animal as a symbol of all the lifes he has saved? Im not sure how many that would be but I know for sure he saved mine.
