Wow! Whale Watching Doesn’t Get Much Better Than This

Video by Kira Jimenez

Today, guests on Kayak Trinidad’s Whale & Wildlife Tour got up close (maybe too up close for some) with a whale spouting.

Jason Self, the Kayak Trinidad’s owner, posted the video captured by one of his guests on his Facebook page and then wrote, “When we say once in a lifetime experiences, seven days a week, it’s not just clever marketing.”

I believe they are violating Federal Regulations and/or guidelines regarding how close they should be to the whales. See for yourself;

While a person may not agree with whale watching regulations they are put in place for a reason.

Yes i hear ya about proximity to whales. My understanding is that the whales came up to them, the regs are in place for the jackasses that chase whales around trying to get these kinds of experiences.
Whales can be very curious. I seriously doubt this company has any intention of violating rules or injuring whales, they are very devoted to healthy oceans. Motors of any kind are awful for sea dwellers, kayaks not so much.

As the person recording the video and a wildlife management and conservation major at HSU, the regulations state you can not approach whales. We were sitting there for almost 15 minutes scouting for whales and I had started preemptively recording to be ready for anything in the distance when the gray whale came up for air less than 10 yards away from my kayak and less than 3 yards from the tandem kayak. The whole recording is about 20 minutes long and I had trimmed it to just the part with the whale breaching (no one wants to watch the ocean move for 95% of a 20 minute video haha). Trust me, all of us up here are whale lovers and have a strong wildlife conservation standpoint and understanding. Kayak Trinidad is very good about stating the regulations revolving around whales including federal regulations because of how valuable wildlife is to them. As another comment states, whales can get curious just like other wildlife (harbor seals, harbor porpoise, etc). They are very aware that we are in the area and they are fantastic swimmers! <3 I hope that people can watch this video and see how beautiful marine life is and maybe even look into things such as whale migration and the big journey they pursue towards the north to breed. I hope videos like these inspire others to educate themselves on current wildlife conservation so we can keep amazing creatures such as these for many years to come!
