Wow. In the teens & 20s these past few nights, it really must have been cold! Our dumb water loving dog jumped off the bank by the bridge at Hell Gate, but it was only 20-30 feet down. We let her figure it out while we called from above! And, it was warm afternoon spring, not this early. Brrrr indeed.
I dropped my brand new headlamp off that bridge one night in early June when the water was slower and about 4.5 feet deep. I was just sitting there watching the stars over the middle of the south fork and my lamp was on in my lap, the next thing i know it slipped through my crossed legs and through a space in the boards. I could see it glowing brightly under the clear, cool water. It was about 55 out and and everyone was asleep back at the campground. When I realized I could still see the glow from the shore i went diving naked aiming for the light. It took 2 tries to grab it, the current totally messed with me down close to the bottom and the headband was snagged a bit. My Queensland swam out with me for moral support. He was like, night swimming, sweet! I went back to the campground shivering and stoked the fire up and dried off. I still have the headlamp, and it still kinda works. Here is a photo I took of the bridge earlier that night. Glad these folks are OK, I hope their dog recovers from any injuries. It’s important to be safe around water.

Hell’s Gate & Devil’s Hole are a couple of ominous place names.
It’s like the people who named them were warning you about something.

The names also reflect the general attitude of many Euro-American settlers about nature and the environment. I wonder if the original names referred to to hell and demon(s). Anyway, it discourages riffraff.
I have spent time on The South Fork of the Trinity Wild and Scenic River and it was wonderful. For not being in an official wilderness, it was a great, classic Coast Range, NorCal outdoor gem. Helps if you are a river person. If not, I can’t Explain it to you. Camp at Forest Glen and swim 1/4 mile east at Hell Gate. What have I done? Actually, it was terrible . . . . .

Years ago our Labrador couldn’t contain herself at the sound of rushing water and jumped in the Van Duzen at Hells Gate in January high water. She went under 3 times and we thought she was a goner. Luckily she was young and strong and made it back across the river and up the bank to us with our pleading and calling. Lesson learned: Lab and any water = Leash!
