Today rivers are receding after being among the highest they’ve ever been. Since the historic 1964 Flood, the Eel River at Fernbridge has only been NOTE: UPDATES are in Green and marked with the time they were posted.
Major Highways–Here’s What We Know:
At this time, most major roadways have reopened in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity Counties but there are still issues.

- Interstate 5: Open but with icy, wintry conditions.
- Hwy 1: Reopened!
- Hwy 3: Closed at Scott Mtn due to snow. UPDATE 1:46 p.m.
- Hwy 20: Reopened!
- Hwy 36: Reopened!
- SR 36 is reduced to one lane with traffic control 3 miles west of Forest Glen (Trinity Co) due to a slide, motorists should expect delay.
- State Route 36 has one way traffic control in effect 1 mile east of Dubakella Mtn (Trinity County) due to a slipout. Motorists should expect delay.
- Hwy 96: Open
- Hwy 101: Open

- HWY 162 (Covelo Road): Open
- Hwy 169 (Klamath): Open
- Hwy 199: Open but Caltrans Message board warns motorists to carry chains.
- Hwy 211: Reopened! (Check out how high the Eel River is on the Fernbridge live cam.)
- Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants):
- Closed between Holmes Flat Road to Bear Creek Bridge
- Hwy 255: Open
- Hwy 271: Open with the exception of a scheduled closure for bridge work .03 miles south of McCoy Creek just south of Piercy.
- Hwy 299: Open: wintry weather. Carry chains.
Humboldt County Roads:
Here is what we know as of yesterday. Hopefully, many of the roads are now open or will soon open We’ll update when more information comes through.
- Blue Slide Road: One way controlled traffic due to slide.
- Briceland Thorn Road at Huckleberry Hhill P.M. 3.20 – down to one lane. Slow down! Flaggers will be out.
- Cannibal Island Road: Flooded
- Chambers Road: Closed due to flooding.
- Copenhagen Road: Closed at P.M. 2.90
- Dillon Road: Closed at P.M. 0.05
- Dowd Road: Closed due to slide
- East Branch Road: Closed due to sunken road.
- Elk River Road at Herrick Avenue: Open but flooded
- Felt Road : Open but flooded
- Fulmor Road: Closed at P.M. 1.25
- Goble Lane:
- Closed at Sage Road, P.M. 0.84
- Closed at Dillon Lane, P.M. 3.34
- Hawks Hill Road: Flooded
- Holmes Flat Road: Flooded.
- Hillside Drive in the Fortuna Area: Slide impacting traffic.
- Jack Shaw Road in Kneeland: Closed due to flooding
- Johnson Road in Hydesville: Flooded.
- Kneeland Road at mile marker 3: One way controlled traffic due to slide.
- Mattole Road:
- down to one lane due to downed tree and communication lines. No vehicles over 7′ allowed. [UPDATE 10 a.m.]
- P.M. 11.73 down to one lane due to a slip out
- McCann Ferry: Closed today. Due to unsafe river conditions.
- Meridian Road: Closed due to flooding.
- Metropolitan Road, between Rio Dell and Fortuna: Flooded.
- Myrtle Avenue at mile marker 4.78 in Eureka: Flooded.
- Old Briceland Road: One reader reports: “Almost impassable…
4WD can make it barely…Passenger cars can’t.”
- Pleasant Point Road: Closed at P.M. 1.15
- Peninsula Drive in Samoa: Flooded.
- Port Kenyon Road: open but flooded
- Puma Drive in Shelter Cove: Closed per Shelter Cove Fire
- Redwood House Road: Closed at mile marker 7.14 [UPDATE 4:01 p.m.]
- Sage Road: Closed at P.M. 0.38
- Shively at mile marker .5: One way controlled traffic due to slide. No commercial vehicles.
- Telegraph Creek Road at mile marker 1.1: Closed due to failed culvert.
- Waddington Road: Closed at P.M. 0.65
- Wild Cat (Mattole Road): One way controlled traffic due to slide.
- Wilder Ridge Road at Mattole Road: Flooded.
- Williams Creek Road: Closed at mile marker 1.4 due to landslide. [UPDATE 9 a.m.]
- Wymore Road, P.M. 0.50: Flooded

East branch is one lane now.
36 near the Carlotta Fire Hall still has a creek running across it. Drivers should slow down!
This last storm was a real “gullywasher”, like I remember from the 1970s. I think we’ve all gotten complacent, and not clearing our ditches and culverts like we used to.
One-lane only on Briceland-Thorn Road on Telegraph Ridge just up from the Huckleberry Hill sign. Road caved in, not the first time. Please be aware and drive slowly.
