A slide has been impacting traffic about halfway between Klamath and Crescent City at mile marker 14 in Del Norte County, according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

The rockslide began around 8:30 p.m. and soon blocked both lanes.

Northbound and southbound traffic is being held on either side of the slide. At this time there is no estimated time of reopening.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 10:03 p.m.: According to the Del Norte County dispatcher, Caltrans is turning around vehicles on the south side of the slide as the road is closed.

UPDATE 10:11 p.m.: California Senator Mike McGuire just tweeted, “Highway 101 is closed in both directions – between Klamath and Crescent City – due to a rock slide. Caltrans and CHP is on scene and working the situation. No estimated time of reopening.”

UPDATE 10:21 p.m.: The dispatcher relayed that boulders were falling on the road and the highway would remain closed until Caltrans could “evaluate in the morning.”

UPDATE Monday 7:07 a.m.:Hwy 101 Still Closed With No Estimated Time of Reopening

What a surprise, I’m shocked! That area of roadway doesn’t seem like the kind of place where that would be a problem!?!? If only there could have been a way to assess the situation and plan ahead. There’s just no way anyone would have been able to see this coming.

There is a constant presence there. Perhaps Redwood Dan knows more than the rest of us on how to keep slides from happening. I’m sure many people and CalTrans themselves would love to know. How about it sir?

Yes, this is at last chance grade near false Klamath cove. My parents were parked there last night for some time before learning they could not get through.

Perfect, the more slides the better. Lets shut the 299 and 36 down. bless the rain. Hope the salmon are running for it. We love you

Easy to say when you do not live in the flood plain. I do.

Let’s each be thankful we’re not UNDER
the slide… and hope no one else is…
and hope that soon
sufficient money and expertise
are applied to this chronically scary,
frequently fatal situation
to meaningfully shift from bandaids on writhing ground and rippling asphalt to actually do more eliminating or correcting the extremely difficult, ever changing situation- for there to be bypasses. tunnels and realignments- to make the road and the life it facilitates from getting disrupted for indeterminate time and making it a lot less likely we’d suddenly become fish or worm food, just like they do in more populated places…
Hmmm…. Hey- Isn’t that what budget surpluses are for?

In the 1960’s the state bought the houses along the bluff to build the bypass. So, here it is over 50 years later and still no bypass. They could have built three bypasses by now with the money they keep putting into something that is never going to work. Just sayin!

🕯But according to to the crowd and Proctor I m nothing. I could have really helped that poor lost boy with just a few bits of information I’d asked for now the weather changed again. So here I am posting on traffic reports instead of looking for a lost soul because the crowd thought I wasn’t worthy.

~wow Willie. That’s a sideways step. “What other people think of me . . .” R.U. Serius?

The idea is to separate yourself from the collective . . . not immerse yourself in it.

Wow. So you had pertinent information regarding finding a lost boy, and you withheld it because you weren’t being stroked properly?

Wasn’t it nice of McGuire to tweet that it was closed? Like Caltrans couldn’t just post it!

We had driven to CC and back thru a few hours earlier. Lots of little slides. Looks like one decided to grow up.

I remember back in the 60’s and 70’s growing up in Crescent City, how the “Last Chance” grade had problems. Dad had a automotive shop there, and we would come down to Eureka to get motors etc. Some of the Cal-trans workers would bring personel vehicles to him, and would talk about the grade. So many times over the years, they would say a “By-Pass” from Wilson Creek to Mill Creek, up over the top of the hill would correct this problem, that would only get worse with time. Their words have come true!!! Cal-trans and the “State of CA” is just wasting our hard earned dollars, trying to fix what could have been avoided years ago. If this “By-Pass” had been put into place years ago when the laws and permits were easier to obtain, this could have all been avoided. I think there is no way they could put in a “By-pass” now with all the enviormental laws and rules. There are logging roads way up on top, that would solve the problems below. Or maybe a “LONG” bridge could be put in down and away from the bluff, from bottom of hill, by Wilson Creek, to south Crescent City hill? Its a shame that lawmakers didnt use the brains God gave them, and correct this problem years ago. It could have been avoided
