Sunday on the Emerald County Highways: Icy Weather Eases Slightly

Today, Sunday, February 17, the sun could break through at times throughout the region. But there could also be snow showers in the higher elevations and rain showers in the lower areas.

The temperature is expected to drop into the twenties tonight throughout much of the Emerald Counties. Even Eureka is predicted to freeze.

We’ve gathered what we know about the roads in the section below.

Major Highways–Here’s What We Know: 

At this time, most major roadways are open in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity Counties though chains are required on some.

    • Interstate 5: Open

    • Hwy 1: Open
    • Hwy 3: Chains required from 7 miles north of Hayfork to 8 miles south of Douglas City.
    • Hwy 20: Open 
    • Hwy 36: 
      • Chains required from 3 miles west of Mad River
        to 5 miles west of Platina. 
      • Slipout 1 mile east of Dubakella Mtn has one way traffic.
    • Hwy 96: Open most of the way but closed north Somes Bar in the area of the Dillon Creek Bridge, according to Caltrans. And there is a slide south of Hoopa but vehicles can get around.
    • Hwy 101: Open but snowy and icy near Willits.
    • HWY 162 (Covelo Road): Open
    • Hwy 169: Open
    • Hwy 199: Open but Caltrans Message board warns motorists to carry chains.

    • Hwy 211: Open (Check out how high the Eel River is on the Fernbridge live cam)
    • Hwy 254 (Avenue of the Giants):Open
    • Hwy 255: Open
    • Hwy 271: Open with the exception of a scheduled closure .03 miles south of McCoy Creek just south of Piercy.
    • Hwy 299: Open: wintry weather. Carry chains.

    Humboldt County Roads:

    Here is what we know. We’ll update when more info comes through.

    • Alderpoint Road–Open. Carry Chains.
    • Bair Road–Closed due to snow 
    • Bald Hills Road–Closed at mile marker 19 due to snow
    • Butler Valley Road –Closed.
    • Goble Road in Ferndale between Highway 211 and Fulmor Road–Closed due to flooding.
    • Hoagland Road–Open. Carry chains.
    • Jacoby Creek Road–Closed due to flooding.
    • Kneeland Road–Open. Carry chains.
    • McCann Ferry–Shut down due to hazardous river conditions.
    • Old Arcata Road –Closed due to flooding.
    • Shelter Cove Road–Open. Carry chains.
    • Showers Pass Road--Open. Carry chains.
    • Titlow Hill Road–Carry chains.

Small correction. I live on Berta, and this isn’t higher than our usual flooding after heavy rains and high surf. 2 years ago, it was nuts, with the flood exceeding 2 feet a few times. 14″ is easy enough in a large truck.

Does anyone know anything more about highway 96? Does it look like a long term closure?
