Screaming Call Tries to Scam Folks to Into Sending Money

Scam Alert feature iconPress release from the Arcata Police Department:

The Arcata Police Department would like to warn the community of an ongoing scam.  In the past two days, two separate citizens have reported receiving a phone call that begins with somebody screaming and then a male voice saying they have kidnapped a relative or loved one and are going to kill them unless you pay a ransom.

The scammer ultimately directs the victim to a location where the victim is told to wire a large sum of money to an account to ensure their loved one’s safety.  The phone calls have been very intense and appear realistic.  The scammers even go so far as to knowing the victim’s name and the name of the relative or loved one.

In both instances, the phone numbers returned to Mexico, and a call back to the number could not be received.  Similar scams have been documented throughout the United States.

If you receive a call similar to this, it is important not to send any money.  Contact your local police department and report the incident.

Way that I look at this is, if a person has that kind of money and falls for this outright scam, then they should be placed under a court ordered person to handle the financial aspects for this person who’s willing just to hand out their money for this scam.

How does a tech guy in India know my name before I tell him? Don’t act ignorant to try to make things align with your political agenda. There are numerous ways, numerous, that someone having a Mexican phone number could have access to that information. Also it seems to be becoming more frequent that something similar to this happens. You call BS because of why? You have no info to call BS on, I’m going to call you naive because I don’t want to get moderated on this one

The very statement assuming wanting a wall is bias (presumably racial) is itself an unconscionable bias. Is it not possible to think that flooding the labor market with illegal workers is detrimental to the already existing workers? Or that truly a great deal of drug and human trafficking crosses at the Mexican/US border? Or that some very undesirable criminals use illegal crossings to escape justice and commit crime? If there is not so much flouting of the law, the presence of a wall would just be at worst a waste of money. The fact that such hostility as calling everyone a bigot who believes in it only shows that the ones who object to border laws truly believe it might be effective at slowing illegal crossings of goods an people.

This big debacle is Trumps debacle. The debacle is the current wall discussion.

If you don’t think Trump is waving flags of bigotry your not paying attention.

So jumping on his debacle wagon is risky for those that choose to.

Your reasons for a wall listed above are already debunked by far and wide.

So no criminals ever cross the border? No illegal labor is used to increase profits? No illegal drugs cross the border? No human traffickers? Must be Brian’s World…

Ever single post you make is a string of insults and unsupported, disrespectful accusations. Self delusional. And people who bother to engage with you get dragged down to your level with your thin skinned refusal to not have the last word no matter how silly that last word is. There is a bottomless well of spite for you to use.

Below is a link to a story.

It will explain the text I just sampled out of Twitter further below.

*The tweets were from
Juliette Kayyem, a national security expert and former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. They were directed to Dan Crenshaw.

https://www.belfercenter.org/publication/border-security-expert-tells-mansplaining-rep-dan-crenshaw-why-wall-wont-work

Basically, I think you know the answer. And if you were listening to the person who is your colleague and who really knows the border (and who comes from your party), you would understand why the dynamics of border security are fluid and require a stratified response, but not static.

So, why does a person who lives, works or has actually spent a career (I think you know my biography so far …) in homeland security and border management would not be in favor of a wall? The alternatives – power man / woman, technology, barriers (yes, to forget nothing, the Obama administration has built almost 800 miles of gates, drones, dogs, I believe that the facts, history, economics and politics go against the construction of a wall. You do not.

Support your argument on facts, history, economics and politics.

(Kayyem took a break of about eight hours before resuming the conversation)

Hi. So I’m back online and thank you for all these answers. I was in a hurry when I wrote this, so I think I’m allowed to continue because in the answers, it appeared to me that the basic principles of security were relatively new to [you] and I will try to arm you with what I know to help in this debate. So back to the substance. I mentioned earlier how we want fluid responses to support the (sometimes competing) goal of “secure flow”. This is how we think about movement in our homeland. (I will leave the moral and legal issues on one wall to others).

But there is also a second principle to our thinking about complex security challenges: layered security. The fundamental goal here is to make sure you do not build a system around what we call a “single point of failure.”

A “single point of failure” should be avoided at all costs as it gets in, the whole system goes down. 9/11 and cockpit doors; Sony hack and a single system administrator; BP oil spill and an anti-eruption obturator. So, ideally, we are building systems that have several
barriers to avoid the point of access (for example, you can not enter a system by cyber attack because the system is stratified and divided in two) or difficult to access (for example, lock the cockpit door, but several layers of security before entering the aircraft.)

So, basically, the “wall” defeats these two fundamental principles of protecting a complex system: balancing security with the flow (the border and entry points) and avoiding the point single failure (the wall can be topped by a ladder or tunnel).

It’s just a way of thinking about the substantive arguments about real security. Moral debates are important. the legal ones too. But it is important that wall critics also have the tools to explain why we are not “soft” in security, but take it very seriously.

Ok, I think I may have broken an unwritten rule of twitter and threads, but my objection to the wall (even assuming I can get it for free and in a day, this that I can not) is not just “it’s not who we are” or “the immigrants are good for America.”

I am not known to be gentle on security, border or otherwise. So in the area of policy options, the wall defeats all the standards we have learned about homeland security in the last 20 years. Now, I say good night.

I personally don’t think that a wall would be the best solution. Just a desperate one in the face of incompetent Congresses. But I don’t think that wanting one makes a person a bigot. I do think that the people making the remark that everyone wanting one is a bigot is the very reason there will never be any real improvements in illegal immigration. Their point is to defeat restricting immigration because they can not think in any other terms than race and/or self aggrandizement. And Congress is way too cowardly as a body to stand for what is good for their countrymen if it opens them up to accusations of racism no matter how unjustfied.

So the more Willie caos-mayhems there are in the world, the more Trumps there are. They leave no other options as an SOB like Trump is the only one willing to take the insults and keep pushing. I think if Congress would face up to realistic border security, then Trump would consider that a success. But they won’t and he’ll keep pushing until he judges it unwinnable. Which is pretty far down the road for him.

Now that Brian has suckered me in again with taking him seriously, I suspect his next post will be insults on my useless wordiness. That’s what’s floated his boat to date.

Brian

No. I agree with you and I appreciate your remark.

I think it is easy to throw around “racist”. But it might be a sign of the times and tensions.

As a white male, I’ve been offended and embarassed by what some of Trump has said. Most notably the NC march remarks.

But his rhetoric is broad and bloody when portraying our Mexico neighbors. Hate crimes are up, but I wouldnt need that statistic to see Trumps language as dangerous. His policy on Islamic immigration is also hard.

I’ve seen generally ignorant and offensive remarks from some frequent commentors that aren’t getting called out. It generally is regarding a wall. I think Willie’s responses are reactive frustrations from such insults. I have been guilty of the same, surely.

But again, this is ignoring the elephant in the room. Racism does exist. Trump does nothing to quell that. Our history as a Country is short, but even shorter for voting women and people of color. As a white male I don’t think I’ve had the same experiance as some friends of mine.

Why would you want to be walled in is the question you need to ask yourselves.

Because that is not a reasonable question. Mexico welcomes tourists who bring money, don’t take their citizen’s jobs or property and ejects those who do. My own country will not prevent me from leaving. Since I don’t want to take or steal, being walled in is not going to happen.

Sam Seder posted a live podcast of an IRS scammer from India where he went along with it forever.
Pretty sad.
The IRS and every other government agency send registered letters and I’ve blown off at least a half dozen fake calls .
I was in a line at the grocery store and I was in a hurry and answered it and two seconds into it was like, ya sure, you are the IRS.
