[UPDATE 4:33 p.m.] Road Watch Across the Emerald Counties Today

Weather imagesAs storms continue to buffet the Emerald Counties expect more rain, snow in the mountains, gusty winds, and even hail.

Below we’ve compiled the impact on the roads. We’ll update as new information comes in.

UPDATES are in bold green letters.

Major Highways–Here’s What We Know:

If you are traveling and could take a photo of conditions and send it to us at [email protected], that would help other people make decisions about whether they should travel or not.

At this time, most major roadways are open in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity Counties.

(Most information below is from Caltrans’ Quick Map. If you are heading to Oregon, check their similar site.)

I think 299 is open with no chains between Weaverville and Redding at this point, frustratingly the Buckhorn cam has been down ever since the power outage.

Better believe on some delays there.

Did you see how much hillsides they are re-engineering for the third time since the realignment years ago?

I said it 2 years ago. Those were poorly designed engineering plans for the earth moving. There should have been 50% more shelves on the slopes…

Now for the next 8 years we will deal with the effects.

Yep like most highways here it was built mainly for the purpose of getting timber floated down the rivers to easier haul out spots where it was then loaded and hauled on the road. Like the semi’s of that time, onky they had to be along waterways.
It made sense for those times especially since they didnt know enough about active faultlines or places like the eel river valley that are already naturally prone to silt/rock slides. Same with railroad thats why a huge part of it crumbled into the eel. Im sure the native folks got all of that without the science had the white folk decided to ask/listen, but thats another story.
