Rippling rainbow this morning above Old Arcata Road. [Photo by Carole Segura]
Last night’s storm broke to allow this beautiful rainbow through above Old Arcata Road about 7:45 this morning but more rough weather is expected today. Gusty winds, high mountain snow, rain and even some flooding are predicted.
If you have any storm photos, please share below in the comment section.

Nice pictures. It looks like this is looking north at Freshwater Corners.
It looks to me like the slough bridge heading into Eureka on Myrtle Ave.
I believe you are correct upon studying the photo.
🕯It is a nice catch.
NOAA’s forcast spent alot of time on “lapse rates” and rising snow around the Trinity Horn, and kinda under played the high winds. We had damaging winds after dark. Seems like much damage to the electrical grid.
Yea, good on you for reading the forecast discussion! That is were the real insights are. The expected audience is weather nerds and professionals, so they often leave out details helpful to the layman.
In short, wacky lapse rates (non-standard changes in temp as one climbs into the upper atmosphere) are strong predictors of high winds, along with thunderstorms and generally unstable weather. With most weather near the ground, driven by, and affected by, whatever is going on in the upper atmosphere, the meteorologists put a lot of attention on what is going on up there. Hope this helps.
