Hwy 101 reopened as of 1:27 according to Rick LeGendre who was stuck in traffic there after a number of trees fell and brought power lines across the highway north of Leggett.

Earlier snow had closed this main artery between Leggett and Laytonville. Then, when the snow was cleared the trees fell trapping a number of motorists.

Caltrans is still officially reporting 101 as closed through the area but LeGendre said traffic is moving.

UPDATE 1:53 p.m.: Northbound traffic has not yet started moving but southbound is clearing out.

UPDATE 3:35 p.m.: Northbound traffic has been moving for awhile.

Thanks for the update. People still driving south. North bound still closed. Any updates on northbound appreciated. Another hour? Longer? People south may want to know it’s not open yet

We sat for 45 mins waiting for northbound to move as it was down to a few cars coming from the other direction. Especially if you’re a woman (pee factor) and just had a knee replacement two days before (makes squatting difficult)

Easy armchair critic.
If you think so then call chp as they reported open at 145. Other news outlets reported the same based on that. Thats why kym always says things change in ongoing situations.
Im sure there are lots of cars backed up on either side, if folks are driving by you going south then know you will go soon, its a one lane situation and honestly we should all be thankful they got it open that quick. Life doesnt revolve around what we want to have happen.
Just roll with it baby.

Northbound still closed. My wife is reporting that the northbound lane is jammed back to the 271 exit. Why aren’t they letting northbound through at all?

3:09. Caltrans lists it as Southern California and lists it as still closed. Thanks Kym for letting us know the correct status. My granddaughter needs to drive to the Bay area today and Caltrans listing isn’t accurate. Leggett isn’t So Cal!

The tree fell at 7:30, 36 PG and E trucks showed up at 11, the road finally opened at 1:19. The southbound lane that is, we sat there for an hour and 30 minutes before they finally let us through. I’m all for people working, but if it’s going to take that long to get a tree out of the way, we’re doomed if anything big were to ever happen. A great amount of tax dollars wasted today, like always.

Do you know anything about high voltage electric circuits lock out tag out procedures, grounding or how long it takes to safely rig a suspended tree to remove it

Apparently 6 hrs to remove that giant 10 inch at the base old growth tan oak that was killed in its prime, and throw a switch to isolate that high voltage wire ,just a hunch ,but I’m going to go out on a limb and say nobody wanted to respond to an emergency call on this beautiful sunday.

🕯According to some people that’s PG&E’s fault, right? Those lines might be old and snap.😁

I was in the middle of the northbound backup, and what seemed to be happening was that southbound traffic was being let through in batches. The trees were down just north of Rt 1, where the road has narrowed down to 2 lanes. But going south the road goes to 4 lanes in the first 1000′ or so. In other words a few slow drivers could not be the cause of the southbound batching instead of coming as a steady stream. The only progress we northbounders made for a couple of hours was moving to fill spaces caused by people who got tired of waiting and pulled out to go south. It seemed to me that the old highway might be open and I saw a few vehicles on it traveling each way. But were they the same vehicles going north, hitting a blockage and returning south? I didn’t want to pull out of my position to go find out since it seemed like we’d be moving “any minute now.” Met a nice woman who had a little dog that was having a great time in the snow while we waited. Mostly I listened to CDs of Nick Carter, “the world’s best fictional detective” adventures. I was glad to find the road bare of snow when we did get through. Sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride as Jack Nicholas said.
