Snow covered several mountain passes this morning including Hwy 299 and Hwy 199. Chains are required on Hwy 36 from Mad River to Knob. They are also required on Hwy 3.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka,

Snow levels…will fall even further Monday to between 500 to 1500 feet by late in the day. As a result many high elevation passes are likely to see moderate to heavy snow accumulations, with light accumulations later in the day Monday to the lower passes where snow is much more infrequent. This includes multiple locations along Highway 101 like Prairie Creek Summit near Redwood National Park, and many spots between Garberville and Ukiah. If you must drive tonight and tomorrow, carry chains and use extreme caution!

Hwy 199 is snowy.

  • Mattole Road in the Bull Creek area – carry chains
  • Mattole Road on the Wildcat, from Ferndale to Honeydew – open with no restrictions.
  • Snow Camp Road and Bald Mountain have 4 inches of new snow and a fallen tree – chains required and crews are en route to remove the tree.
  • Wilder Ridge Road – carry chains

Please drive careful on the coast as it is hailing with rain. Drive slower and be cautious, the roads will be more slippery than usual.

My guess is that it will be somewhere in the range of dicey to frightening.

Hwy 36, top of McClellan mtn… It’s pretty nasty, not recommended to drive it unless you are very comfortable with snow driving. Plows are having trouble keeping up.

Parts of Larabee Valley are referred to as Little Siberia, although not due to snow fall, but cold weather that can happen year around. Fun fact

Snowed in whitethorne area 10:30am, then sun melted the little bit that stuck. Big heavy clouds to west moving east-ish now, small snow flurries at 12:15.
Watch out if going out cove road, from here looks like theres low clouds& its probably snowing pretty good around paradise ridge, winds picking up too.

Over a foot at 3500 feet. Just above berry summit. Be careful out there! We are staying in and hunkering down. Picture from about 8am, deeper now.
