Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes Delivers Flag to Veteran’s Widow
While on her way home from attending a meeting in Sacramento with the League of California Cities, newly elected Mayor of Rio Dell, Debra Garnes, met Karen, the Manager of Granzella’s in the town of Williams. Having never met before, Mayor Garnes was surprised to find out that Karen happened to have an Aunt who lived in her home town of Rio Dell. During this brief encounter, Karen was able to enlist the services of Mayor Garnes in delivering a valued treasure to Karen’s Aunt, Nancy Kurtz.
Mrs. Kurtz has been a resident of Rio Dell since the age of nine and currently is 90 years old. She was happily married to Albert Kurtz, a Navy Veteran who passed away January 22, 1992.
Mayor Garnes, who also is a Navy Veteran, was happy to deliver the valuable treasure, her late husband’s flag, a memento that she had been separated from for 27 years.
Mayor Debra Garnes delivered the flag directly to Mrs. Kurtz in honor of her late husband’s memory and service to his Country. The delivery occurred on January 22, 2019, exactly twenty seven years since Albert Kurtz’s passing.
“It feels like a miracle to get this today because you know it’s been 27 years today,” Nancy Kurtz stated. Mayor Garnes intends to visit her newfound friend regularly.

🕯🕯Now that was a real good heart warming morning read, thank you Kelley.
Shameless self promotion….
I’d say getting good publicity for your community is a politician’s job. Rio Dell is one of the cities and towns that are managing to ride this economic bump we are on. Someone in town is doing something right to make that happen. She’s a new mayor so I wouldn’t lay the praise all on her but she certainly isn’t hurting things.
I wouldn’t mind seeing more stories about the goodness of humanity. Mayor Garnes is a veteran herself, and has my complete respect.
Don’t tell me that she should walk away from doing a good thing just because she is a politician. We have too many of our leaders that walk away from doing the right thing already.
Hurray for Kym for the story. Hurray for Kelly. Hurray for mayor Garnes for doing the right thing. Hurray for Nancy Kurtz for getting another high point in her life.
~thank you Ernie for pointing out that Mayor Garnes is a veteran. She’s got my support then -not that i live in Rio.
~thank you Ernie for repeating that Mayor Garnes is a veteran. She’s got my support then –not that i live in Rio.
Thank you Ernie! Well said.
Thanks, Kym. I heard about this story right after it happened. Based on what I heard, the Mayor was genuinely happy to be able to help the widow of a fellow Navy veteran. Sharing this joyful story with others in our broader community is NOT shameless self promotion, imo. I find it sad that people are immediately cynical of our good Mayor’s motives. Thank you for your service, Mayor Garnes.
🕯👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you, Kym!
And if she did nothing you’d complain about that too.
How else ought she let the community know what shes all about?
Politicians arent my fave but ive taken to calling to thank them when they do something helpful instead of just when im pissed about something.
Try it sometime.
Nancy, I’m so very happy for you in getting this tresured momento of Alberts from so long ago. You and Al were a couple of my very good friends over the years in Rio Dell and I know that he is smiling down on you at this time and telling you that he LOVES you and that this will be a forever remembrance of your Lives together over all of those years.
And God Bless Rio Dell Mayor Debra Garnes for going out of her way to get this to you. I congratulate her for her act of kindness.
