Bare Branches and Early Bloomers: Winter Plant Hike in the King Range

buds on trees in late winterPress release from the Lost Coast Interpretive Association:

Join native plant enthusiasts Cheryl Lisin and Bergen Brell for a winter plant hike, Sunday, January 27 from 11 am to 1 pm at Nadelos Campground in the King Range. Learn to identify trees and shrubs when they are without their leaves, which is especially handy in the case of poison oak! We will also find early blooming wildflowers and many other interesting plants. The trail is level as it winds along North Fork Bear creek for a mile, then moderately steep for a mile as we hike up into the tree canopy. There will be the option of an all level hike.

Bring a snack and drinking water and dress in layers as it can be cold along the creek. Waterproof footwear is a plus. Nadelos Campground is on Chemise Mt. Rd., 1-1/2 miles south of Shelter Cove Rd.

This hike is part of a series of Lost Coast Interpretive Association educational events and is in partnership with the BLM King Range and the King Range Alliance. Email info@lostcoast for more info.

Ramas Desnudas y Flores Tempranas

Made me recall this classic 1970s show, when people grew plants and not marijuana…

~the ‘plant’ you refer to is hemp. Jack Herer warned us in his book ‘The Emperor Wears No Clothes’, that the word ‘marijuana’ is slang; as it was overheard from Mexican prisoners after the Mexican American War. Maybe they were saying ‘prisoner’. Nevertheless, it is defined in Merriam Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, paraphrased by me as, the hemp plant’s destination – end of annual season flower.

“It’s just a plant” – from the movie ‘Humboldt County’ (2009), by a little girl 7-8ish (?) . . . wearing the cutest child’s hat w/ears throughout most of the film. Try it, you’ll like it.

“Cannabis” also works for me as well as “weed”. Oh, heck, are we off-topic? Ahead of the thread? I assume that intense rain and gale-force winds will cancel the hike(s)? But these are young folks so who cares?
