Wind, Rain, and Massive Waves: A Photo/Video Ride Through Thursday’s Storm
Video by Sheila Stewart.
A wave or two decided to grab some breakfast at the Seascape Restaurant and Pier in Trinidad yesterday morning as is shown in this Facebook post.
At least one of the changes from the storm brightened the summer outlook for the North Coast–Ruth Lake is now full. The below video shows water magnificently roaring over the spillway.
Most of the impacts were much harsher–with roads, especially rural roads, opened new potholes and crumbed under the onslaught.
Trees toppled and power lines dropped as high winds tore through the area. But, later in the day, the clouds parted and intrepid folks ventured out to breathe in the clear air and capture some glorious natural beauty.
But, winter isn’t over. The National Weather Service in Eureka predicts,A frontal system is forecast to stall over the region today through Sunday. The front will serve… to focus moderate to heavy rainfall over Del Norte and northern Humboldt Counties Friday through Saturday night. Due to the long duration of the rainfall, a flood watch has been issued from 4 PM Friday through 4 AM Sunday. Lesser rainfall amounts will occur across the rest of northwest California. In addition, gusty south-southeast winds will develop this afternoon and evening over portions of interior Humboldt and Del Norte Counties above 1500 feet in elevation, where gusts from 40 to 50 mph will be possible. A colder airmass will enter the region Sunday afternoon, causing snow levels to fall to around 4000 feet.

Impressive. Thanks to all.
Moving deeper into the sixth mass extinction accelerated and catastrophic climate change typhoon and monsoon weather patterns along with sea level rise well take out a lot of the infrastructure including homes and highways dams levees low-lying towns and cities mixed with droughts and scorching hot Dust Bowl weather events mega fires and then mudslides are going to take their toll famine and food shortages along with disease and pestilence we’ve been warned now we are seeing it in our lifetime runaway climate change so bad we might not be able to stop it Doctor Doom was warning us for a long time well good luck now the sky’s falling
~and we’re paying for it with our priceless souls.
More light! We need more sunshine to get thru the death dumps in the sky, and love like you’ve never loved before Emerald T.
Sweet! I’m ready! Humans will live in true peace once electricity is gone again. Fuk my phone. Fuk my internet. Fuk my car. E.M.P
Yes! Because there were no wars, before electricity!
Of course changes will take out infrastructure. That is obvious, and has always been recorded since writing was invented. Harbors slit out of existence, earthquakes reform the land. Volcanoes erupt and change the atmosphere. The only surety is that, while humans may resist the loses, most of the time they simply move. And there is little they can do otherwise.
Of course there is a chance human mass extinction will occur. Of course I might win the lottery even though I don’t buy tickets. But no life can be lived as if that passes for a plan.
Get real just big waves and high tide.
Island mountain road yesterday morning.
Looks nice, good to view from afar, but don’t build houses near it because it happens.
That’s not a beachfront. I’m worried we’re all gonna impulsively clear-cut the planet so nothing burns but making the whole situation worse. Yikes.
Yikes and Yikes!
We Lost Paradise no telling what’s next Doctor Doom left out a lot Blizzard’s Hurricane’s Tornadoes and what happens if some of that methane that’s getting released catches on fire that probably won’t happen until the very end when the last people are crawling out of their bunkers and the sky lights on fire so beautiful the end
Yo drove to eureka this morning between c r n feilds laing you can see across the South Bay for the first time in my life 61 years in sohum I’ve seen waves break the South spit .I was stationed at sml boat St him by I was in the guard uscg we had some Gail’s butt nothing like this yes there is see level rise and
Waves have broken across the south spit for years.
During an extreme winter storm, waves coming across used to ‘wash out’ the
road going to the south jetty.
North spit (Samoa), water didn’t come across to the road to the Pulp Mill (by the ‘Milwaukee Rock’).
(I witnessed that before… 1980 some-odd).
A small amount of sea water did come through the paved ‘parking spot’ down by the co-gen plant.
Good waves, hightide… but there has been high water before.
In 1969 (or so)… Humboldt Bay came up to 1st street.
Lazios parking lot had about a foot of water in it. (I drove through that one.)
Then a few times the bay topped the dikes at the ‘Simpson’ plant between Arcata and Eureka.
They had to evacuate the office.
Historically, and probably the highest recorded water, there was a
king tide/storm wash that came all the way up to 2nd street in Eureka.
It flooded the sawmill boilers along the waterfront and out on the island.
Louis- Why didn’t you post a picture of Gail’s butt?
Will never get why the county doesnt upkeep old briceland road. If the road gives out in whitmore grove again for a long time, theres really no other way for everyone from ruby valley and west to get to town besides old briceland.
Theres a lot of traffic on briceland road! Its a stretch to put that much traffic on a back road in good shape nonetheless old briceland!
Seriously think about it, how would you get to redway?
Usual road!
I guess you could drive to Honeydew and over Panther Gap.
Sheesh.
Seen a redwood close bull creek red for 2 weeks while wildcat was closed for nearly that. Petrolians had to go through red way to eureka. Add old brick and red to that.
Breathe. With an e.
*Star*
Apparently…today was not my day. Fixed now.
Heart.

~i thought you were replying, in your way, the way you do w/style, to Big louie, saying “breathe” – because of the times posted.
My mistake.
Great article! Thus far, the heavy rain, sleet and thunder is exciting.
Yes it gets more and more exciting even when it becomes detrimental to human life. In these catastrophic Earth changes we should soon keep all the borders open with shifting weather patterns no one on the planet is safe mass exoduses will have to happen when the northern polar ice sheet melts might happen this year predictions of a El Nino ocean current with the ocean warmer then usual NASA prediction is that it starts warming from the top down with the jet stream getting more erratic food production in some areas could be almost impossible even this could be exciting Guy McPherson has been attempting to steer us to move in the love vibration and has been warnings Humanity for a long time the main body of scientists are finally seeing we are headed there
Or not… experience has said “not” . “Michael Tobis, a climate scientist from the University of Wisconsin, said McPherson was out of his depth and “is not the opposite of a denialist. He is a denialist, albeit of a different stripe.”” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_McPherson
In Fields Landing there was hail and more than an inch of rain in 5 minutes. Streets flooded instantly.

Can we get CAFW and the State Water Board out here looking at some of the roads the county is responsible for?
Perspective’s comment made me laugh outloud. Love it!
We finally get some decent rain and all I hear are complaints. 4 1/2 inches in about 30 hours at my place. Haven’t had that amount since 2003 (4 inches in 30 hours), during a private cannabis cup. What a party that one was.
Awesome photos and video!
I almost forgot that back in November we were praying for rain because of the fires.
Back in the early eighties I stopped to eat at a pier in the LA area. I was the last patron out of the restaurant as waves crashed into the windows, much like the pictures of Seascape.
Two hours later, as I left LA, I heard on the radio that the pier had been washed completely away.
Question: Is Old Briceland Road a county road? Or is it a private road through the ranch? I have heard both theories.
I remember one year when major slip outs on Briceland-Thorn Road on Telegraph Ridge (Huckleberry Hill), a mud slide on Ettersburg Road, a mud slide up on King Peak Road and flooding on the Usal Road made it literally impossible for anyone in Whitethorn and Shelter Cove to get out by road.
My point is that keeping Old Briceland Road maintained would at least give us who live west of Briceland one more option, especially in emergency evac situations.
If it is a county road, could some of the tax funds be used to fix it? Or is it on private ranch land? If so, maybe the county could use eminent domain to make it a county road by grandfathering it, as it has been used by the public for so long.
Most of the roads are either County or state good question and if there ever is a slide between tobe Park and Garberville are the bridge can take out that road to the airport so as a emergency road it is vital for emergency transport
Unfortunately, rain that falls that fast, especially on steep slopes and where the geology is unstable — true throughout the North Coast — can cause more damage than benefit. What we really need is many long dreary weeks of steady, light rainfall. Like the Good Old Days. But yeah, I love watching and hearing a thrashin’ rainstorm from a safe, dry, warm place. Power of Nature!
Like the good old days? Like 64 or 55? That was some good steady light rainfall, they even put up signs along the roads as a testament to it
~i wasn’t in Humboldt that long ago, however, i remember good ol day’s storms of the past thirty years – CAME DOWN sometimes for 24 hrs. non-stop along with the proverbial no electricity. Stock up on candles and lamp oil. The outage, not IF it comes, but when, i’m betting will be longer than three days.
How are your tribunals going? Have they arrested 80-100 members of congress yet?
