Crescent City Felon Arrested on Christmas Day in Willits With a Firearm and Stolen Property, Says Mendocino Sheriff’s Office
This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On 12-25-2018 at about 11:22 PM, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a call from a reporting person who was following a white 2005 Chevrolet truck in Willits, California.
The reporting person advised the driver of the truck, later identified as Ethan Bauer, [28 year-old male from Cresent City, CA] had stolen a gas can from his residence in the Brooktrails subdivision of Willits. The reporting person directed a Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputy to their current location.
A Deputy was able to conduct a vehicle stop on the 2005 Chevrolet truck (which was not displaying any license plates) on Highway 20 near Main Street.
The Deputy contacted the driver and sole occupant, who identified himself as Bauer.
While Bauer was attempting to locate paperwork in the truck, the Deputy and a Willits Police Department Officer noticed a empty gun holster in the glove box.
In the bed of the truck, the Deputy located a green gas can, which was identified as the reporting party’s property.
The Deputy attempted to locate registration for the truck and check for the presence of a handgun because of the empty holster.
During this activity, in plain view on the passenger side seat and door panel the Deputy saw mail for numerous locations in Mendocino County. These included locations in Brooktrails, Willits, and Redwood Valley.
A further search of the truck was conducted resulting in Deputies locating checkbooks, checks, and other mail from as far away as Oregon.
Under the hood of the truck, Deputies located a rifle. Deputies found Bauer had an extensive criminal history and was prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.
Bauer was arrested for possession of stolen property (496(A) PC), forgery (470(D) PC), felon possessing a firearm (29800(A)(1) PC), and mail theft (530.5 PC).
Bauer was booked into the Mendocino County Jail where he was to be held in lieu of $35,000.00 bail.

What a terrible hiding spot for a rifle. I guess he planned on never needing a jump or refilling his radiator in a public place.
Have a Holly Jolly Christmas it’s the best time of the year, hell with that nail amount he’s probably already out.
How the hell did he fit a rifle under the hood of the truck? And was the hood able to fully close with it in there?
it is common hiding place for weapons as most leos dont search engine compartments.
thanks we will now!!
Law abiding citizens. Turn in your semi-automatic weapons so you can defend yourself with your single shot 22 against ALL these criminals with stolen “assault “ rifles while high on meth. Don’t worry the 10 rounds you have might, be able to stop them
just buy a shit ton of 0 rnders and practice droping and slamin
I thought stealing mail was a federal offense?
35 Grand bail seems pretty small considering.
