[UPDATE 9:03 p.m.:] Chains Required on Hwy 36 From Hwy 3 to Platina

Caltrans QuickMap shows chains are required on Hwy 3.

Snow is falling on areas of Hwy 3 mostly in Trinity County though we have one report of scattered snow that is not yet sticking in Humboldt County as of 9 a.m. Caltrans District 2 warns that chains are required from the intersection with Hwy 3 all the way to Platina.

They state,

Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.

So far, Hwy 3 does not show the Chains Required sign.

UPDATE noon: Caltrans QuickMap now shows that Hwy 36 has Chains Required starting three miles east of Mad River. Neither 299 nor Hwy 3 need chains according to QuickMap. Note there has just been an accident on 36 near Platina. Please be careful in the area.

Kym, or anyone, does anyone know if there is black ice under the snow at higher elevations in SoHum? I’d like to take my dog up to the snow tomorrow, but if there’s black ice I’ll stay home.
