About 8:40 p.m., the old church on the 500 block of Elm Street next to the Jerold Phelps Community hospital in Garberville caught fire. As of 9:30 p.m., the fire is mostly under control but the building is badly damaged.

Julie Ann Shelton, a neighbor said, “We heard a strange sound like someone is banging pots and pans. The glass was blowing out from inside the house.”

Video by Julie Ann Shelton

Shelton said the fire exploded fast. “I started banging on the neighbors’ doors to get everybody out…The power lines were smoking.”

Though the building had been mostly empty, Shelton said, recently people had been working on it. “Over the last couple months they had cleaned it up a little bit,” she said.

Firefighters are currently working on completely extinguishing the last of the fire.

UPDATE 10:07 p.m.: According to the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services, “The fire is reported out, and didn’t spread beyond the initial structure.”

Garberville is going to look like the next Detroit! It had a church? I thought the hippie progressive was anti-god. Maybe it was a cultist church.

Church Of The Devil’s Lettuce…

Hippies are Godless heathens that worship at the alter of The Golden Pitbull who believe their saviour will return in a Toyota truck with a dent, bringing them all to Costa Rica where they can get $4800 a pound for Big Wreck.

Just ignore them and they will move someplace else…

Ignorance masquerading as sarcasm?

Multiple churches, a Catholic monastery, a Buddhist monastery. Bound to be more that I’m unaware of.

But keep blaming all your woes on one source; you’re doing exactly what your government wants, keeping yourself divided without their added intervention.

Cheers.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Those are from the original commandments, the ones that Moses smashed. God gave him a revised set, and that set is the one referred to in the texts as the Ten Commandments.

The real 10 Commandments start at Exodus 34:10. They are significantly different than the first set of commandments.

They are not ignored, the bums are fed, free bathrooms, free handouts, free weed, tolerated, and in return….. they burn down a second church in return. No other small town in AMERICA has as many bums and transients as [edit]! Travel around and you will see. I’m really not so sure about this county anymore…. just a little pisssd, with a little bit of sadness thrown in.

As an EMT, you are part of the largest parasitic digleberry on the American economy, the for-profit medical industry. I’m not judging you personally for working in that field on the ground level, I used to be an EMT. Just pointing out you’re throwing rocks in a glass house.

The American medical system isn’t more expensive because we pay doctors more. It’s more expensive because special interests have made sure there are no government price controls.

An EMP is an Electro-Magnetic Pulse. An EMT is an Emergency Medical Technician.
Am I missing a connection here somewhere?

An EMP, like caused by a nuclear explosion could blow the crap out of the Lost Coast. An EMT would help the people that might have lived through it.

I know, I have spoiled your fun….

Congress made deals with those lobbyists, which makes Govt controlled prices the problem.
Cap on prescriptions for Vets in exchange for any price will do for all other meds.
That happened during the longest lobbyist session ever in congress, back when Boehner was still there.

About 9pm I got a text from a dear friend. ….Your Church is on fire NOW.

I called to hear more. Yes, the Christian Science church in Garberville is no longer. Yes, it is an old beautiful church built by over 50 people in the early fifties. The roster of church members include some of the most loving, hard working, dedicated strong believers who helped to built southern Humboldt.

The man who texted me came to the church saying he was dying within the next few days several months ago. He lived and now months later was the person to make this sad call.

You can burn down a church but you can’t take God out of our communities.

They are all theories until proven true or false. Sometimes there really are conspiracies. Sometimes the theories are just crazy. Does it hurt to discuss these things?

Some of us believe rich, conservative fat cats conspire to keep and amass more wealth and power. Some of us believe liberals conspire to implement totalitarian socialism. Some of us believe neither. Some of us believe both. Reality is often incredibly boring but sometimes it’s stranger than anything you could make up.

It was the Christian Science church. It had a congregation who met every Sunday. Their Reading Room provides the food bank a place to give food out for the needy.

The Christian Scientist Church had or has a congregation that meets every Sunday? At that particular location it seems no church meeting has been on-going there for quite a while. By the looks of things it seems to have become a storage area. Bummer to lose all the great wood work and history but it would be nice to see something postive going on there. The half done yrad work and piles of brush and the flostson collecting around the place the past few years have become unsightly.
A strong Chruch congregation usually makes some kind of effort to keep up appearances.
If it is still classified as a church and belonging to a religious order does that mean some kind of tax free haven? What happens when it becomes private domain?

There hasn’t been power or propane there for some time and all the pews were stacked into the middle of the room. And you’re expecting us to believe a congregation has been meeting there in the cold and dark sunday mornings?!

FYI, if interested: The Christian Science Reading Room is not in the burned church. It is across the street from Radio Shack, and the Food Bank distributions made from it are alive and well.

As to the building that burned, I believe it had severe electrical problems (i.e., bad wiring or wiring gone bad) and was filled with lots of burnables, like books, cardboard boxes, and loose papers. The fire could have been caused by something as simple as a small earth movement or even a rat poking around (many lived there according to what a former “tenant” told me) shifting something to where an unshielded wire lit it up. No need to place blame where there may be none.

For what it is worth, both KMUD News and the local ABC channel are reporting tonight that PG&E has said there was no power service at the building at the time of the fire.

Garberville redevelopment in action!

This building has been an eyesore and an attraction for bums and robbers for years. It’s too bad the old places have to burn, in Garberville, before the town can go forward…

I don’t think it will be a church, after this.

The first time I visited Gville was in the late 80s. We were on a quest, and we found it. When we got out of the car I turned to my friends and said “welcome to the wild-fucking west. Lets make a few bucks while it lasts”

Last month I stood at the same exact spot, turned to my friends and said “lets get the fuck out of here and never come back….OK” Stay classy Gville, stay classy.

Now I got some property for sale…..BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Who doesn’t.

Thank you Dave. I do get a bit irked when people post crap on this site. Kym works hard and provides this community so much and to have trolls posting lies and opinions that are not a true representation of our area is pathetic. His comment about selling his property says a lot. If he has been here since the 80s he obviously caused some reason for the community to not embrace this person. The one thing I hope he is not lying about is moving. I will even volunteer myself and my crews to help him pack.

I was born in 1980 and am the fourth generation of my family to live in Humboldt County. I also smoke pot. My wife and I have strongly thought about moving our three children somewhere else, the culture around here and in the State of CA in general has just gotten out of hand, plane and simple. I’m hoping it calms down after the storm that’s coming.

It is a beautiful exodus!! I have seen the first wave leave when Colorado legalized. The next wave in 2014 after Oregon and Washington passed recreational. I am hoping as more and more states legalize those that came here will go home. This wave leaving now is bitter, greedy, self centered bunch of negative twits. Obviously they migrated to us from the central and southern part of our state. Kinda like a cannabis civil war as I see it but their oderless dry crap will never compare. So I see hope we will clean up their mess of humanity they left behind and get back our way of life.

We did the same as most of the multi-decade-transient growers: made a shit ton of money, had a ton of fun, and stuck it to the fucking man exporting tax free cash. My essentially worthless properties will be rolled into a bankrupt corporation – just the cost of doing biz. It was a great run while it lasted, probably two years too long anyway.

You my friend, may as well be…..the man. Enjoy living in the Appalachia of the west. Always pays to have a clean exit plan. We took the pot and left behind the meth and heroin.

If your god burns down churches to force them to stop helping the poor, its not a god worth worshiping.

Kelley Lincoln

I am not much of a biblical scholar, but i did attend a few years of Sunday school. I thought i remembered something about the Bible suggesting kindness and generosity toward the poor.
Google has a better memory than me, so here ‘s the list from openbible.info. It does seem to repeat a couple of times, but the message is pretty clear, being poor is not fun or easy, and the wealthy are expected to share. My point isn’t “you should do this,” but that it seems a church who gives to the poor is walking their talk and can’t really be criticized. Their regular meetings notwithstanding.

Proverbs 19:17
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.

Deuteronomy 15:11
For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

Luke 14:13
But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

Luke 6:20-21
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

Luke 4:18
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

Deuteronomy 15:7-8
“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.

2 Corinthians 9:7
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Matthew 25:31-46
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, …

Exodus 23:11

Isaiah 10:1-2

I first read the word “Google” before the lengthy comment, you must be sure to acknowledge that “Google” has been known to censor certain types of speech, and has a leftist leaning agenda. kinda like going to the grocery store , and buying food, black label like in the Communist Countries…

Don’t worry, there’s plenty of right-wing shit in the bible, too. Try the old testament, maybe the book of numbers.

I’ve been reading articles and comments on this website for a couple years now and this is the first and last comment I have and will make. I have noticed the same people comment on a daily basis. I’ve never seen such a bunch of worthless sacks of shit. You all spout your opinions that nobody gives a shit about. How about get a job and contribute to society. I’m on my lunch and going back to work now so I can pay for all your government benefits. Nothing but turds. I’m out

Just got home from work my self. Why would you bother reading the comment section if you dont care what opinions others have? Thats whats getting really fucked about our country, nobody gives a shitt about others opinions any more. There is only 1 you, but there is about 325,000,000 other people in this country, and they all have a opinion.

All the kindest best people I’ve come across in life are hippies, there the realist people around!!! Maybe if you people commenting about them would have been raised around them you would have turned out not so screwed up and hateful. Carmas real!!!

The kindest people I ever met have been Quakers in general. Followed by Canadians. Of course nurses in general have been up there. I have seen kind behavior from police many times with people I would be scared to go near.

There have been hippie riots and violence. Also a lot of selfish, dangerous drug behavior. And cults. I think that hippie means different things to different people. As far as it goes, hippies are no more a uniform principled group than any other.
