Man Found Dead in Suspicious Circumstances Near Mouth of Smith River Still Unidentified

The man found deceased December 29 north of the mouth of the Smith River and west of South Indian Road near the ocean has not yet been identified, said Commander Bill Stephens of the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office today.

“We are not sure who he is,” Stephens said. “Nobody has come forward.”

Stephens explained that the deceased adult male had been located by a passerby. “A jogger was going by and found the body about 10 a.m. Saturday,” he said.

“The death is under investigation,” Stephens told us today. “It is suspicious.” But he added that detectives are still unsure whether there was foul play involved.
