Last night a slide closed Hwy 299 between Helena and Junction City in Trinity County. According to Caltrans District 2’s Facebook page at 6:41 a.m., the road “remains CLOSED approximately 3.4 miles west of Junction City due to a slide.‬”

Rocks, mud, and a tree crossed the road last night about 7:45 p.m. and it has remained closed all night.

The CHP Traffic Incident Information Page reported at 5:21 this morning that the road will possibly be open “in the next couple hours.”

UPDATE 9:35 a.m.: The slide continues to move and there is not yet any  estimate of how soon the road will reopen. Caltrans reported at 9:02 a.m., “[Hwy 299] remains CLOSED approximately 3.4 miles west of Junction City. There is still no ETA for opening. The slide is still active.” ‬

UPDATE 11:03 a.m.: According to Chris Woodward from the Caltrans District 2 office, the roadway is now open to one way traffic with one hour delays.

Wonder if it is at one of the sites of supposed highway improvement by Mercer Fraser. Much of it looks like job security to me. Cut away solid rock, grade it to a smooth, steep angle, plant it with grass and hope that, for some reason, water won’t be running down hill in that location.

Really? This is the area of the Helena fire in 2017. I was surprised there wasn’t a slide in that area last winter since the soil isn’t stable after a fire. Your comment is just ridiculous

The 96 through Hoopa will bypass Weaverville and get you north of Redding. The 199, the 162 and the 20 will all get you to the I5, but it’ll add hours to your trip.
