Caltrans crews are struggling to keep Hwy 299 open as an active slide continues to dump rock and mud onto the vital east west traffic route. The slide closed the road last night about 7:45 p.m. between Helena and Junction City in Trinity County. This morning, the road reopened with delays.

According to a post on Caltrans District 2 Facebook page at 12:16 p.m., the road “is open to one-way traffic control west of Junction City. Motorists can expect one hour delays in the area. Crews continue to clear debris.”

A large amount of debris has been dumped on the road. Katie Stollmeyer Fulton, a reader, said she took a photo of the slide last night right after it closed the road.

UPDATE 5:47 p.m.: Caltrans reports, “Highway is now open to traffic in both directions. Traffic control has been lifted and slide has been cleared.”

No. That was Big French Creek which is west of the current slide.

Just curious: is this one of the places where the highway has been straightened and widened or is it a more natural slide? (Not that a highway is ever “natural”.)

No, this wasn’t in an area where any realignments had recently been made.

The highway intrudes into the inner gorge of the Trinity River and undercuts the toe of the slope .

Maybe we can ask Elon Musk to come make us a tunnel…….

There are places in the Trinity alps where tectonic plates move more than an inch a year. Those tunnels won’t be as easy to readjust every year as a road or a rail.

It would be cool, but I think, I’d still stick to surface roads.

Am I out of the loop? I hope you don’t mean tunnels through the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Not likely unless there’s a second term.

It’s like they are putting their finger in a dam. If and I know IF is an if we get a lot of rain 299 could be the next 101 from eight years ago. That’s IF Mother Nature gets pissed. Maybe she will throw in an earthquake or two. I had my house and back building earthquake ready so I am curious if the engineered earthquake strengthening will really work.
