This ‘Labrador Retriever Mix’ Needs a Good Home

From petfinder.com:

Hi, my name is Decoy!

I’m a 5 pound, male, labrador retriever mix, and I was born around 10/30/2018.

I like to play with toys, and enjoy lively interactions with people and pets. A playful dog like me will have fun during a game of fetch, of course, but also when quietly chewing on a stuffed toy. Whatever kind of toy I like best, I’ll want my new family to play too!

Beast time to get one for a child to let them grow together, the dog will protect the child.

Why not just let the pup grow up to be nice and friendly. Why do people always think dogs need to protect? We don’t need aggressive dogs in our society. That’s what’s wrong with the animal shelter. They put mean killers among us and that’s not right. You probably own a pit bull

Really? You got all that from Willie’s comment? A gentle, non-aggressive and friendly dog can also be reasonably watchful and protective of children at the same time. Most do so out of natural bonding with family. Who said anything about training the dog to be an attack dog?

Wow , do you know dogs at all ? A dog is a pack animal, it protects others within the pack . A human is part of the dogs pack . Normal order .
I had a big , gentle flat coat, he would stand his ground to protect myself and my wife as was never taught to. It came naturally.

Agree!!!! Some people need to live in a Bubble I suppose. And I’ve been around Labs AND Pits and BOTHS can be the sweetest babies you ever come across. I know 5 Pits, all from different families that are BIG BABIES and sweetest dogs you would ever meet. One gives me kisses and love every time I walk in his owner’s home. He’s a big baby. So really people should STOP assuming dogs are naturally mean!!! That would be some people that are born evil, NOT dogs! Dogs are taught by their owners how to behave.

Labs are perfect dogs for families. And it is GOOD to get a dog to be protective of children. They bond. However, it can happen with a Pitbull too IF you teach them correctly. I’ve seen it in person 5 separate times. The myth of pitbulls being mean is crap! It’s how they are trained. So whoever made that remark needs to learn before they speak!

I agree with you. I have a Labradoodle and if you came to my door she would scare you half to death. However when you open the door she’s all links and wiggles.

It’s in a dogs nature to protect a child it grows up with and I also see by your remark th as t you know nothing about animals since you believe pit bulls are mean

It’s sad that there are so many people with this mindset. Animals abandoned by their owners at shelters don’t even get a glance when they’ve done nothing wrong. You obviously are not familiar with many people who rescue dog. Or that own pitbulls. You wouldn’t spread this kind of hate if you did. Stop by a shelter and try accusing ever dog you see of being vicious. You’ll be surprised. Merry Christmas, I hope you find some love to lighten your heart.

This is what people like you give dogs a bad name. You need to research the pit bull dog breed because they are the most loving dogs ever. It is only how you train any dog or treat a dog that they become aggressive. Pit bulls is only a name

I agree. I didn’t take the word “protect” to mean anything about training a dog to be aggressive. Dogs protect children in many ways.
They may bark if the child starts toward stairs or another hazard. Some have even tugged on the coat if a toddler wandering toward the street. Dogs are known to have put their body between a snake in the back yard and defend the child from it to protect it. As for pitbulls, they were known as the “nanny dog” because they were gentle with children and would also protect them in situations like I just described. We volunteer with a dog rescue and have fostered many breeds of dogs including labs and pitbulls. I can tell you, the puppies are not born with aggression. People do that with either negative aggression training, abusing a dog, or purposely training a dog to fight.
Bad people who train dogs to fight and be aggressive are the ones we should be concerned with. It ain’t the dog.
That’s my two cents for what it’s worth.

I have found that after having 4 labs (over 40 years) that they are naturally protective of their home, owner or car, truck. They have an instinctive territorial nature. They are so very loyal and loving. I could never own another breed. I have seen my dogs turn from sweetheart pups to raging vicious nasty animals in a nano-second. I was amazed/shocked to see it transform into protector. Will all labs do that? My guess, most will!

It’s a lab and they will defend and protect if they feel threatened it’s in their DNA
And why would you think that all pits are bad companions it really depends on how they are raised.
Just like people, they are quick to assume!
I just hope Decoy finds a forever family with kids to grow up with

You obviously know very little about animals and their propensity to bond with humans. The bond can be very strong and create an opportunity for the animal to utilize its natural instinct to protect the pack. Humans are part of that pack in a dogs mind. By the way get over pitbulls they can be very gentle and loving pets. Knowledge is power, start reading.

We have a blue pit and he is as gentle as can be, but he will protect like any other dog. We are his family member as he is our family member. PEOPLE give certain dogs a bad reputation not the dogs themselves!!

Protect doesn’t always mean aggressive guarding.
Labs are known for protecting them from their own dangerous surroundings also.

[edit]
Dogs protect the people in the family they’re in because they regard that family as their pack. Children are regarded as pups. The protective response is not with aggression, but with a maternal/paternal attitude of the dog towards the child. So if you dont know what your talking about, keep a lid on it.

What if a dog is properly trained to protect it isn’t a killer. No I don’t own a Pit Bull it isn’t the breed it’s the owners. Please educated yourself [edit]

[edit] My girl is a lab pit mix and she is the sweetest, snuggliest, most playful pup you’ll ever meet! My dad’s girlfriend has a pit coyote mix (not sure how that happened but it did) and he is quite the guard dog but he has had reason to guard- from people trying to break in to an evil neighbor shooting through our fence at our other dogs. He is one of the sweetest, most well behaved dogs I have ever met- and I’ve met my fair share of doggos. @thebigdeal you are part of the problem with stereotyping dogs and if you have nothing better to do then be a jerk on someone’s positive post about having a pack animal that will be loving and bring happiness while also adding another layer of protection to the household, and be dog breed racist that obviously says more about you then it does about pit bulls! Don’t bully my breed!

Tuesday mornings KMUD has the PET show. They advise, wisely IMO, that an animal is not a toy and XMAS is too chaotic a time for new puppies. A better idea is to get leash, blanket and toys, as gifts…then wait til normalcy (hopefully calmer times lol)return. Of course rescuing is great!

I used to have a yellow Labrador Retriever who lived to the age of 14 He had 2 different buddiesto play with , both were English Pointer’s,. They had plenty of room to run at my house and family farm. They were in excellent shape physically and obedient as well. They were all used for hunting and also lived inside the house with me. I would love to raise another good dog to join me in the outdoors and I just love Labs, If that cute.Lab pup is still available I would love to share my home with him. Contact me at [email protected] and kefme know!
