Arcata City Council Elects New Mayor, Vice-Mayor

Arcata, CA – The Arcata City Council elected Vice-Mayor Brett Waston to be mayor and Councilmember Michael Winkler to be vice-mayor in a special meeting and swearing-in ceremony that took place at [Thursday] at noon.
The special meeting began with the official swearing-in of Councilmembers Sofia Pereira and Brett Watson for their newly-elected four-year terms, which was followed by the vice-mayor and mayor elections.
The City’s Municipal Code requires the Arcata City Council select the mayor and vice-mayor annually at a special meeting held each December. Both Mayor Watson and Vice-Mayor Winkler will serve in their new roles for one year.
The Mayor of Arcata’s duties include presiding at Council meetings, representing the Council at community events and performing other ministerial duties, and the vice-mayor will preside in the event of the mayor’s absence.
“It was an honor to serve as Mayor of Arcata, and I am thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve the City and our community as a councilmember for the next four years,” said Sofia Pereira, Councilmember and outgoing mayor.
Of his appointment, Mayor Watson said, “I love Arcata, and it really is an honor for me to serve the City in this capacity. This next year will be a great year for the City, and I look forward to continuing my work with the community in order to ensure that Arcata continues to be the best place to live, work and play. I encourage all community members to reach out to me with their concerns and ideas, however big or small.”
Mayor Watson will preside over his first regular Arcata City Council meeting on Wednesday, December 19.
