Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, Says EPD

Press release from the Eureka Police Department:

Eureka Police Department EPDThe Christmas and New Year’s holidays are ways to spend time with family and friends ringing in another year, but also a time when people can make poor choices that put themselves and others at risk on the road.

To help spread the message about the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, Eureka Police Department is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to get impaired drivers off roads.

During the high-visibility enforcement campaign Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, which runs from Dec. 14-Jan. 1, Eureka Police Department will have more officers on the road conducting saturation patrols looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

“Whether you are home with family or at the bar, it is important that you find a sober ride home after drinking,” said Sergeant Gary Whitmer, Eureka Police Department.” As an adult, it is up to you to make adult decisions and drive sober or use a ride share service. There are no excuses for driving impaired.”

Eureka Police also reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” Marijuana, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs.

During the 2017 Christmas (Dec. 22-25) and New Year’s (Dec. 30-Jan. 2) holiday periods, 25 people were killed and 643 injured on California roads, according to data from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS).

“Drunk driving continues to be a huge problem in this country, and more recently, marijuana and drug-impaired driving,” Sergeant Gary Whitmer, Eureka Police Department “People are out and about shopping for the holidays and going to or hosting parties, so it is important that everyone acts responsibly behind the wheel.”

Funding for impaired driving enforcement operations are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“May you live in interesting times”.

Myself, i wouldn’t want to be impaired in any way and miss a nano-second of this life we share with Mother Nature. All the wonders around us. I tell ya what didn’t show up in November like they Always do – those dark brown shiny w/a gazillion itsy legs that sleep in a circle thingies – concerns me.

I do wonder where the bottom of the rabbit hole is tho. Or if there is a bottom?

“The bad news is millipedes often embark on mass migrations, especially on humid, warm nights in the fall and spring, during which time they wander into garages, basements and other parts of the house. ” https://www.extension.iastate.edu/news/2008/sep/162601.htm

I too noticed the absence of millipedes this year so far. And, while I can’t believe it bothers me, the absense of the huge number of my old nemesis, the slug. I think the lack of humidity in the last couple years is the cause.

I’ve actually had conversation/thoughts with a slug. Once a year, in the winter time, one shows up and is determined to come inside. First, he expands himself and rolls in a blobular circle where a door-bell would be -if i had one. When i told him he can’t come in, feelings hurt, he pulls in his antennae and heads on over to my front window. They are faster than one would think . . . going out to get more wood, i didn’t close the door – and sure enough, there he was inside by the front light switch. Not wanting to touch him, i drug a comb thru my hair and was heading out to get a neighbor to remove him. By the time i got coat and hat on – he was back outside!

I certainly hope that the CHP begins wholesale arrests and citations of ALL persons who appear to be DUI, all the time.

Why just get crazy for enforcement around the holidays?

The roadways of Northwestern California are infested with people who are driving while high, driving while impaired, and driving while intoxicated.

From Lake County to Oregon, you are 5000% more likely to be killed by a speeder, a crazy person, a person who is high on marijuana (which does not improve your ability to drive one bit!), or a gun-waving industrial-strength drunk.

The CHP knows this, and, they seem to only pull over the most egregious violators, those who crash, and those who citizens phone in complaints about.

So: Report crazy driving to 911! See a drunk? Drop a dime! Give a good description of the location, make and model, license plate (if you can see it safely), and a description of the driver, if you see the driver…

Don’t cost nothing! Make yourself and other citizens safer! Do it for your family, your people, your mother!

Support your LEO’s, don’t hate them.

” . . . a crazy person, a person who is high on marijuana . . .” It’s been my experience that the “crazy person” is going along at maybe 30 miles per hour . . . on a “high”way.

Good point Billy – make a phone call warning.

I’m grateful to those officers out there doing something i wouldn’t want to do.

They just need to park on the main roads, like Broadway and probably G street and corner of 11th and K in Arcata and use their noses. I almost always smell burning weed coming from moving vehicles in these places. It’s blatant, and easy to identify the (usually) truck it’s coming from by spotting the dreads or similar hints. It’s so easy to profile burners around here. I don’t care if people smoke, but c’mon now don’t do it while driving through town. It’ll never happen though, as the article/press release is just a scare tactic. They never bust stoned drivers.

Once you have “had drink taken” (line from one if my favorite books) , it is unlikely that you will make a good choice about driving. The time to avoid your own and other’s deaths is before you start drinking. Make a small envelope with the taxi companies phone number on the outside and money for the ride home, with a home door key, sealed inside and lock your keys in the car if you were foolish enough to drive to a bar or party.

Let’s hope they enforce the no cell phone laws too. I can’t tell you how many stupid drivers talking or texting on cell phones and all over the road have almost caused accidents lately. Shut off the cell phone and drive. You can’t pay attention to the road and talk or text. don’t be stupid.

Be especially aware that off-duty LE (or maybe just friends) will contact their on-duty buddies if they think they spot a revenue generation opportunity. If you’re driving after 8pm and the only other car on the freeway is a steady two lengths behind you, matching your lane changes, then brace yourself, Brigid.

My favorite used to be a small billboard on 299 East of Redding. Drive hammered, get nailed.

Increased penalties would reduce impaired driving. Current penalties are a joke.

Just a heads up C.H.P will not impound your vehicle if your drunk driving. They will park it and take you and the keys to jail. Then after 4 to 6 hours you can go back to your vehicle. That really show it’s okay to drink and drive. I’m a tow truck driver and just got told that.
