Home Lost in Fire Near Hydesville Last Night

Structure fire

[All photos by Bobby Kroeker]

A single story home was destroyed by fire last night on River Bar Road near Hydesville. Just before 11 p.m., a neighbor reported hearing an explosion and going out to see flames swallowing the house.

A one lane road and downed power lines made difficult access for firefighters. Water tenders had to be brought in because there were no hydrants.

The flames spread from the home to the trees surrounding it. One vehicle was badly damaged.

One neighbor said he didn’t believe the resident of the home was there at the time of the fire.

Never a good ending. Explosion? Propane?

Question;

Is this area considered Fortuna? Is this why the Fortuna Fire ‘District’ showed up instead of the Hydesville Fire guys -who are just up the hill and two skips from Murrish’s Market?

That’s quit a leap to see one vehicle and assume only one station showed up. Wouldn’t it be more logical to assume multiple stations showed up?

Irrational leaps of logic, loose cognative assossiations and rambling aphasia are Central HumCo’s calling card.

Opinions, everybody has one.

There is only one cause of unhappiness – the false beliefs you have in your head, beliefs so widespread, so commonly held, that it never occurs to you to question them.

Now you’re off to the next topic with a non-sequiter quote. You dont respond to J’s post or show any evidence that Hydesvill Volunteer fire dept. was negligent.

No, not considered Fortuna. But when lives and property are at risk, you wanna bring in the very best. In this case, tho, they had to settle for Fortuna Fire Dept.

Hydesville is part of the Fortuna fire protection District. Therefore a Chief from Fortuna Fire would show up as would several engines and watertenders from neighboring departments like Carlotta and RioDell. Central Humboldt county is lucky to have such great cooperation with great leadership exemplified by Lon Winburn and Rus Brown from Fortuna Fire

Fortuna Fire District is an area of approximately 29 square miles. Hydesville is part of the Fortuna Fire District. The station, engines, equipment, etc. are all owned by Fortuna Fire District. The volunteers who respond to station 3, (Hydesville) are members of the Fortuna Vol. Fire Department. Station 3, responded with two engines to the Riverbar fire as did Engines from the main (Downtown) station and Station 2 (Campton Heights). This area has no hydrants, therefore a a request for water tenders was made to neighboring fire departments. To answer another stupid comment, Fortuna Fire does not want to take over the county. The fire districts of Fortuna, Ferndale, Loleta and Rio Dell meet quarterly to see how we can save our tax payers money by joint purchases and to try and make sure that the areas needs are being met. I hope I have clarified some rumors and if people have time on their hands……volunteer yourself to your local department. Every volunteer fire department in this county and across the United States are are short firefighters. And to answer another comment, the City of Fortuna and Fortuna Fire District are two seperate agencies. If you will check, Fortuna, Arcata and Humboldt Bay Fire have taken little measure Z money so the smaller outlying departments could replace outdated engines and equipment. I would like to invite anyone to attend the Fortuna Fire Districts monthly meetings. They are held on the second Monday of each month, 7:00pm at the main station. Dave Nicholson, Board Chairman, Fortuna Fire District.

Hydesville and , Fortuna VFD are one and the same. No lines just good old life saving with a small yearly tax. For the tax residents get completely transparent govt. At its very best. These volunteers don’t receive a dime and give their own time to make sure our community and all the other Communities under FVFD receive best in class service. So my final thoughts are this. Say ‘THANK YOU”

I don’t mean to come off as crass. But since we haven’t created a world without commerce yet, and everything has a dollar sign attached to it, and The City of Fortuna (Inc) is flooded with the infamous Z paper, and the Fortuna Fire guys have to show worth for value, and Hydesville doesn’t bow and scrape and fill-out endless quarterly reports and requests, and show how to spend Other People’s Money for the “public $afety” . . . it makes me go hmm.

Nonsense. go find out whats actually happening. Hydesville might have had an independant Fire Company some time long ago, but now it seems to be covered by Fortuna. That means any Measure Z, (O) money also gets spent on Hydesville operations, like last night.
And in any case Measure O (lets just get caught up to the preasent) money actually gets disproportionally distributed to the smaller Fire Departments, and Companies, which is a good thing. The “Big Boys” Arcata, Humboldt Bay, and Fortuna, recognize the challenges faced by the Fire Service in our smaller remote communities, and consistantly vote to distribute Measure Z, and now O funds in a way that helps bring the smaller outfits up to the same standards as the big ones.
You put “public $afety” in quotes! Dude they were out all night putting out someone elses fire! it doesn’t get more Public Safety than that!

The Hydesville Fire Station is home to Company 4 of the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department. It can be confusing, however, if you look at the fire trucks parked at the fire hall in Hydesville they all say “Fortuna Fire” on them. Several of the fire apparatuses and fire fighters on scene last night are from the Hydesville hall (Company 4) of Fortuna Fire. If this still doesn’t paint a clearer picture for you, I recommend calling Fortuna Fire Department or visiting their website for further explanation and information.

So you feel that Fortuna is overstepping their jurisdiction by helping Hydesville? Or that Hydesville Volunteer Fire dept. Is being lazy with their paperwork?

What a difference a word makes. “Structure” is bad enough but “home” carries so much more meaning. I’m sorry for the residents’ loss and hope that the statement that no one, including pets, was home at the time is correct.

Please let us know how we can help the family, kym do you know if pay it forward helps in these situations?
Condolences to the owners.

A friends aunties house just burned down from build up on the lint screen in the dryer that wasnt cleaned off. It happens.
Also most toaster “ovens” that you can bake with on countertop say in their manuals to keep unplugged, they can spontaneously catch fire.

I will allow this: I did not make an improper comment. The content of my comments were not improper. If any of those with their tights tightened –attacking one another like good little slaves – have watched the devastation of “Firestorms” over the past few years, you may have noticed that, YES, the forest lands of CA.INC. are divided into U.S. Forest Service and CalFire.

In the comments section of uploaded fire videos, there were several mentions of local firefighters arriving on the scene only to be turned away because, well, they weren’t classified as U.S. or State of . . . So, it’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination, when everything is based on funny money, to inquire about the local fire departments.

More than one post yesterday answered my question about Riverbar Road being in the Fortuna area. Yes, it is. Thank you FC @ 7:59 am yesterday.

I did Not say one word regarding the firemen in Hydesville being negligent. Thank you FC @ 7:59 am and Me –also at 7:59 am. and Richard @ 10:57 am., and others, for pointing out that Hydesville and Fortuna are one in the same fire district.

Z – “Yes!! THANK YOU to all the Hum county Fire Depts, volunteer & paid. Many, many Thanks!!!” Ditto.

I can’t always reply when the thought police switch gets turned on.

Don’t shoot the messengers.
