Albert Etter’s Day December 15th at Redwood Acres in Eureka

The Humboldt Cider Works will be celebrating the life and botanical work of Albert Etter:

From the desk of Tom Hart, co-owner of the Humboldt Cider Company:

Join us December 15 for a celebration of all things Albert Etter as we release our new cider, Albert’s Experiment. We had the unbelievable opportunity to connect with the Hobbs Family in Ettersburg and make a cider using apples from Etter’s original experimental orchard! This fully dry, unfiltered cider has tons of character, both in taste and history!

Albert Etter, commonly referred to as “Humboldt’s Luther Burbank,” was a horticulturalist who became famous for his contributions to strawberry and apple breeding during the early 20th century. He grew up in the Victorian town of Ferndale, before establishing a homestead in Ettersburg. It was from this homestead that Etter developed many of the apple and strawberry varieties that are world-famous today.

We will be hosting talks at Redwood Acres Fairgrounds beginning at 2:00PM that focus on orchard maintenance and the history of Albert Etter. Stop by for a cider and learn a thing or two about Humboldt’s famous horticulturalist. Topics will include Albert’s legacy, pruning, grafting and pollination. We invite all community members to share their stories about Albert Etter. See schedule below!
Schedule · Saturday, December 15, 2018

I am very proud to own an original Etter’s apple variety. It is not available commercially and was passed down through scions by locals. By far my favorite apple. Very reliable too.

If you graft your own trees, you’ll never have to settle for tasteless grocery store apples again.

I have 2 apple trees grafted from an old orchard on Dyerville Loop Road. Someone who had researched apples from Etters apples thought they might be ones he developed. Would love to know if this is correct. So would the family of man who grew up and owned ranch on Dyerville Loop Road.

My favorite is the Waltana apple. Delightful. I don’t think Albert had a hand in it, but I don’t know. I think it was named for Walt and Anna Etter?

My first bite out of one knocked my socks off. Crisp, sweet, delicious, medium-sized. I’m glad I have a Waltana tree, it’s the latest producing of them all and my favorite tree. Now Kings are awfully hard to beat for our climate, durability, taste, beauty and size, but I like the Waltana a bit more.

Talked to my cousin in Santa Cruz working for the agricultural department. There’s a gazillion apple varieties and folks who made them, especially in his area. The name ‘Etter’, though, rang a big bell for him, and he noted Mr. Etter was famous and quite well known in California apple growing circles even today.

Waltana’s are the best apple I’ve ever had. Perfection!
