Always Wanted to Parade With Bikers? Kiwanis Holds Annual Toy Run in Southern Humboldt and Everyone Is Invited
Bring your motorcycles, cars, trucks, and buses to the 2018 Toys for Tots run/parade/party put on by Kiwanis on the Redwoods on December 9.
“We’re inviting everyone not just bikers,” explained Lisa Gribi, secretary for the Kiwanis club. “We’re meeting by the clock tower in Garberville at 11 a.m. an there will be coffee and doughnuts….Then we’ll parade through Garberville and Redway.” Afterwards, she said, the crew will head to Phillipsville.
After the parade, the participants are invited to a party. Participation in the parade is not required, just show up and join them for a good time!
“The final destination is the Riverwood Inn,” Gribi said. “We’ll have Christmas dinne–ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, greenbean casserole, and homemade apple crisp for a $15 donation per plate.”
To get into the party, it takes one new unwrapped toy or $20 per person, Gribi said.
“The donations go to the Toys for Tots fund,” she explained. “Last year, we provided toys for over 250 local families. At the Mateel on December 15, the parents come and pick out the toys they want for their kids. That way kids don’t have to know their parents are getting help getting their toys.” Parents will be able to select two presents for each of their children, in addition, the Kiwanis will provide a book for every child.
The needy families are chosen through the Southern Humboldt Family Resource Center.
Drop off locations this year for toys are at the Miranda Market, Redway Feed, True Value in Redway, Ray’s in Garberville, Allsport, the Peg House, and the Leggett Valley Mercantile.
In addition to the money and toys gathered at the Run and the dropoff locations, the Marines of Eureka also donate a number of toys to the needy families.
Also, businesses can sponsor the event for a donation of $50. They will get their name put on the back of the Toys For Tots T-Shirts (available at the party), donations must be received by December 1st. ALL proceeds from this event go directly to the Toys For Tots program.
