Holiday Castles & Graham Cracker Houses Workshop for Kids on December 8th

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

Arcata, CA – The City of Arcata Recreation Division is excited to be hosting two fun and festive Holiday Castles and Graham Cracker Houses workshops on Saturday, December 8.

Children ages 4 to 10 are invited to register for these hands-on workshops and delight in the excitement of creating an elaborate cookie and candy house in the spirit of the holiday season. Attendees will have the opportunity to share stories, play games and nibble sweet treats while they create a magical holiday decoration that they can take home for the entire family to enjoy.

A workshop for children ages 4 to 6 will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and another for children ages 7 to 10 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The cost for each workshop is $15 for Arcata residents and $21 for non-residents. The workshops will take place in Arcata Community Center’s Arts and Crafts Room, located at 321 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway.

The Holiday Castles and Graham Cracker Houses workshops will occur in conjunction with Arcata Recreation Division’s 19th Annual Holiday Craft Market, happening at Arcata Community Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to shop for one-of-a-kind holiday gifts at the market while their children participate in the workshop or with their children following the workshops for a $1 donation per person.

To register for the workshops or for more information, call Arcata Recreation Division at 707-822-7091 or visit cityofarcata.org.

Real graham cracker houses (like the ones made back in the 20th century) do NOT use candy canes as load-bearing structures, but California’s overly-restrictive regulations mandate the use of these sugary lodge poles to meet their increased earthquake standards. I expect there is a conspiracy of collusion between the legislature and the seasonal candy industry, but someone keeps eating all the evidence!
