You’re Invited to an ‘Exploration’ of Fall Mushrooms of the Usal Redwood Forest on November 17th

This is a press release from the Institute for Sustainable Forestry:

Please join the Institute for Sustainable Forestry on Saturday November 17th for an informative exploration of the fall mushrooms of the Usal Redwood Forest. Leading us will be Humboldt County mycologists and local mushroom aficionados Kyle Keegan and Harry Vaughn. We will be meeting at 9 am at the Peg House directly across highway 101 from Standish Hickey State Park or at 10 am at the WRP gate on Highway 1. We will be car-pooling into the Usal Redwood Forest. Participants will be observing the forest community, collecting edible mushrooms to celebrate the bounty of the fall, and conducting a bioblitz of the fungal community using the inaturalist application. Even with little autumn rain, there will still be mushroom habitat to explore and fungi botany to discuss. Bring your lunch, water, weather appropriate clothing, hiking boots, smart phone/camera, notebook and a basket for mushroom collecting. After the mushroom walk we will have an open discussion on opportunities for regenerative non-timber forest products at the Peg House where there will be music, a late afternoon meal including mushroom soup and merlot wine will be available at the Peg House for purchase.

For information call ISF at (707-244-4584) www.instituteforsustainableforestry.com, [email protected]. The hike will be canceled in the event of severe weather.   A $25 donation is requested.

Remember, the last ISF, Circle Around the Sun tour will be December 8 for “Fire Up 2018” at the So Hum Community Park for demonstrations on prescribed fire (Rx fire), biochar, community, forest and household fire defense along with Rotary Club awards for VFD Fire Hero awards.
