[UPDATE 7:10 a.m.] Fire on Union Street Near Harris in Eureka Early This Morning
This morning about 12:45 a.m., a building in the 3000 block of Union Street in Eureka caught fire just south of the Harris Street Market.
Flames from the fire covered the back side of the building.
Both Union Street and Harris Street were closed as firefighters battled to keep the flames spreading to nearby buildings.
UPDATE 7:10 a.m.: Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:
On November 5th, 2018 @ 0045 hrs Humboldt Bay Fire responded with 2 engines, 1 truck, 1 squad and 2 chief officers to a reported Structure Fire to the rear of 411 W. Harris St. The first arriving engine reported a single story, residential structure fully involved with fire in alley to the rear of 411 W. Harris St. Due to the threat of the fire spreading to neighboring businesses a commercial 2nd alarm was requested. The fire was controlled in 30 minutes and the commercial 2nd alarm was cancelled. Damage was limited to the original fire building with an estimated loss of $100,000. Humboldt Bay Fire remained on scene for an additional 2 hours and the cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no Firefighter or Civilian injuries. Humboldt Bay Fire would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance: Samoa-Peninsula Fire District, Arcata Fire District, Loleta Fire District, Fortuna Fire District, Eureka Police Department, City Ambulance and PG&E.

I feel sorry for the family being so close to the holidays.
Would you feel less sorry for them any other time of the year? Is losing everything you worked for OK if it’s during the summer?
That is not a reasonable accusation. The poster may just find it (theoretical plight as no one knows whether there is even such a family from this article) more poignant considering the upcoming holidays, not that they would be unsympathetic otherwise.
