22-Year-Old Fortuna Resident Arrested With 112 Marijuana Pounds, Alleges Missouri State Trooper

Pounds of marijuana on vehicles

Missouri State Troopers arrested a 22-year-old Fortuna woman, Rosa Velasco Maldonado, and her companion, Daniel Dominguez Silva, on October 22 for allegedly transporting 112 pounds of marijuana.

According to a statement of probable cause from Sgt. L. Allen, he stopped the gray Toyota Tacoma with a camper shell driven by Maldonado when he “observed the driver and passenger sitting in a rigid posture.”

He said when he spoke through the open window to them, he believed he “could smell the odor of raw marijuana and dryer sheets.” Eventually, after backup arrived, a search of the truck allegedly revealed “four large duffle bags containing 112 individually wrapped bundles of marijuana weighing approximately one pound each.”

Both were arrested and charged with transportation of marijuana. Dominguez Silva was also charged with being an undocumented foreign national.

  • Ooo driving while rigid DWR, yep I get pulled over for that all the time.

    • Rigor mortis set in.

    • I can’t remember the details but someone recently got their charges dropped bc the search was based on rigid posture and not looking at the pig when they passed. The search was deemed unreasonable. I think they found 500 in the vehicle it was in one of the Dakotas.

  • OMG! Rigid posture!

  • political moderate

WTF? Driving while rigid? Glad they are cracking down on rigid driving. California plates, rigid driving, tonneau cover, they were just begging get stopped.

  • “Sit up straight!” Unless you’re driving, duh.

  • How’s that “open borders” thingy doing for your market.

  • apparently in Missouri they dont know what a camper shell is. that is a tonneau cover

  • That has GOT to be the lamest excuse EVER for a traffic stop!!!! More likely he saw Cali plates & figured it wa worth a shot!!! It will be SO nice when Cannabis is finally legalized on the Federal level!!!

  • maybe we should confiscate all their property then they might stop committing crimes (illegal aliens)

    • Lost Croat Outburst

Where does it say they are illegal aliens or is that just a favorite theme of yours? OK, one individual was undocumented. ONE.

  • The Entropic Empath

    So, profiling much?

What’s the current penalty in Missouri, for transportation of of flowers?

I predict a pot shortage in Missouri, into the near future.

  • Rigid posture = CA plates, tonneau cover, a little darker skin than white. Whats great about this police scam is about 99% of the time they will find the weed. With a good attorney, they have a chance of beating this bullshit.

    • You should check further before making so many assumptions just because they are congenial. On the arrest specified above- “pulled the vehicle over after he observed it followed one car length behind another vehicle. After pulling over the Tacoma, the trooper reported he smelled raw marijuana and dryer sheets upon approaching the vehicle’s passenger side. Maldonado admitted smoking marijuana the previous night and possessing a small portion in the Tacoma’s center console.” ICE “was to issue a detainer for him the next day, according to the probable cause statement” due to “illegal re-entry into the United States. ”

On the one with the tonneau cover- Chad Davis, of Anna Illinois, reported he bought the truck with the tonneau cover while on a visit in California and didn’t know that there was 80 lbs of pot in the back.

Apparently typical California driving always offers the police cause for a stop.

      • “According to a statement of probable cause from Sgt. L. Allen, he stopped the gray Toyota Tacoma with a camper shell driven by Maldonado when he “observed the driver and passenger sitting in a rigid posture.” This was the initial reason for being pulled over. The smell and conversation were secondary.

        • Tailgating was the reason for pulling them over. They could have been in rigor mortis if they had not offered poor driving as an excuse. But basically I agree it was likely that police looked for an excuse after thinking they were behaving suspiciously. Meh.

      • Seems like the story will read more to humboldt county liking if pertinent facts are left out…and if you pay attention, California drivers are great at following too closely, pay attention to the vehicles around you on your next road trip and you will notice California plated vehicles are usually the rude drivers. If you are going to “drive dirty”, then drive defensively.

    • That goes for the drug dog too. If they find drugs after the dog does a “signal” its proof the dog was right. If they find nothing after the dog “signals” ,it’s thrown out of court because the dog is only right 90% of the time. No winning!

      • I was detained at ACV and searched because a dog hit on my bag in Minneapolis. Nothing in my luggage, they spent 30 minutes digging through my dirty underwear.

During the search, once they realized I was not the droid they were looking for, the agent in charge told me about Lt. Steve Knight’s dog. They nicknamed him “French Fry” because “all that dog could find was your lunch. “.

  • Sir Step out of the car please you seem a little rigid “sorry sir I just really dig a man in uniform”

  • Interesting how a undocumented foreign national is referred to as fortuna resident..more like drug dealing illegal alien!!

  • So Missouri has gotten to the point of not even bothering to use an actual infraction for their lie that will hold up in court and cover up the profiling for traffic stops they are so famous for to now making up laws that I really hope do not actually exist. Even in the state of Missouri driving while “sitting in a rigid posture” should be an easy toss out for these two as long as they hire a reputable attorney.

    • JustWantToHeartheEndoftheStory

So you want THC infused brains in control of vehicles on the interstate. Interesting take on the situation.

      • Even though this report says nothing about the driver being under the influence of THC and nothing in my comment shows even a hint of my views on driving under the influence of THC I will answer your question. I would gladly share the interstate with drivers who smoked some pot over drivers who are under the influence of alcohol.

        • You don’t get to choose. And unfortunately you’ll certainly going to have both. I’d rather have neither but that is not a choice either.

    • Turns out they were tailgating also.

    • They won’t get tossed. Judges no longer care about constitutional rights. They are on the same side as the lying cops. Most folks don’t get caught but the ones that do are fucked and sso are their homies.

People get pulled over for “looking away from the LEO” or “looking at the LEO” as both raise reasonable suspicion that a crime is being committed.

      • It all comes down to the attorney. Judges may no longer care about constitutional rights but reputable attorneys are right there observing and developing new strategies to challenge these changes in the system as they happen. It’s one thing that makes them reputable.

    • Ice Ice Ice baby !

  • These poor guys get caught, and 1,000s just like them go on without problem. Just another round of stupid reefer madness nonsense. More waste of police and court resources all billed to the taxpayer.

It’s absolutely clear that Cannabis is in wide general use throughout the United States! Whether or not cannabis is legal does not seem to make much of a difference regarding popularity and consumption. It’s perfectly clear that cannabis is much safer than booze. The only open question is who will profit from the sales of cannabis, organized crime and criminals, or legitimate business with regulation and Taxation?

    The FBI estimates:

    * 100 BILLION dollars in black market recreational cannabis sales every year here in the United States and all that money goes to criminals and organized crime.

    * 30 BILLION is lost in potential tax revenue.

    * 15 BILLION is wasted on the capture and persecution simple cannabis consumers.

Legalization solves all these problems and kicks organized crime out of the cannabis sales in favor of legitimate business.

    • Yes. You can’t fix stupid. Apparently you can’t even slow it from making itself even stupider by chemical enhancement. Acknowledging that is only reasonable choice left.

Googling “stupidest things done while stoned” will absolutely convince you of that. It’s like a stupid contest in which the stupid are proud of the level of stupid achieved.
Of course, how to keep the stupid from driving while extra stupid is a problem to be solved later.

      • Just more silly reefer madness nonsense!!!
A short list of highly successful cannabis consumers:

Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sir Richard Branson, Barack Obama, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton, Stephen Colbert, Katy Perry, LeBron James, Jay Z, Bill Gates, George Soros, Michael Phelps, Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, Seth Green, Rush Limbaugh, Andrew Cuomo, George W. Bush, Seth MacFarlane, George Clooney, Lady Gaga, Ted Turner, Brad Pitt, Rihanna, Whoopi Goldberg, Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie, Conan O’Brien, Martha Stewart, Gov. Charlie Baker (MA), Francis Crick, Tom Brokaw, Michael Bloomberg, Justin Timberlake, Aaron Sorkin, Glenn Beck, Al Gore, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon, Madonna, Robert Downey Jr., Phil Jackson, Rick Steves, Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Hugh Hefner, Maureen Dowd, Willie Nelson…

        • Just think how better the dropping of American IQ would be if pot didn’t impinge on thinking. Maybe Martha Stewart wouldn’t have lied to the Federal agents and ended up in prison or Bill Clinton would have kept his hands to himself or Hugh Hefner not required someone to buy his home with the proviso that he be allowed to keep living there, etc.

Trying pot as a youth or because one is sick is not a recommendation for continuous recreational use any more than a daily dose of alcohol is. It’s something people do despite being intelligent, not because if it. There is little hope in it for the already not so bright.

          • There is not any scientific peer-reviewed evidence at all that proves that cannabis use causes lower IQ.

Quote from Famed Astronomer Dr. Carl Sagan
“The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world.”

            • Carl Sagan was one very, very physically sick man relying on pot to soothe himself. Not exactly definitive.

On the other hand, for personal experience a pot using neighbor once burned his house down while high, another pot smoking neighbor was persuaded to drive down the road with his 8 year old son clinging to the roof of his SUV because the kid thought it sounded like fun, another burned his brush pile under some trees “because the ground was clear in the shade,” another simply sat all day every day, and two died of COPD. And as I said previously- just google “stupid things done while high.”

        • And not one the people you mentioned were stupid enough to try to smuggle 112lbs of illegal weed trough Missouri with no green card

    • it should never be legalised it should be de crimminalised. eating salad or growing salad has never been legalised

  • Tailgating or following too closely or failure to signal properly are all bullshit reasons to stop vehicles that the cops already know have dope in them. The locals and feds are tracking cell communications. Drop phones offer no protection. They simply connect the dots from one dope dealer to another. No need to profile anymore. They follow the vehicle’s progression past toll booth cameras. Once popped they use ‘parallel reconstruction’ to make the arrest appear that it was for cause. Anyone who has been in contact with this crew will be or has been under surveillance. These mules will be looking at 10+ years in a MO prison which we certainly get them talking.

The realities of the traditional market. Be careful and have a great day!

  • That’s a dodge Dakota tacoma don’t got taillights like that

  • Cannabis prohibition is a ridiculous waste of police, court and taxpayer resources. Cannabis prohibition enforcement is mostly just cops looking for low-hanging fruit and soft targets while major crimes like murder, rape and assault go unsolved. Data from the Center for Disease Control proves that cannabis is much safer than alcoholic beverages and tobacco products which are completely legal. Based on that fact alone cannabis should be completely legal. Cannabis prohibition wrongfully persecutes and criminalizes cannabis consumers for selecting a recreational substance that is MUCH safer than booze or cigarettes!

In the USA 9 states have fully legalized recreational cannabis including: Washington, Maine, California, Vermont, Massachusetts, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, Alaska plus Washington DC. Canada, Uruguay, Jamaica all completely legal for recreational cannabis!

31 states and counting have legalized “medical” cannabis!

Celebrate democracy at work with FREE states ending government corruption! Citizens demanding the return of their rights and their freedom!

The Madness is over, Legalize Recreational Cannabis Nationwide!

  • unbridled philistine

Oh I see. Do not drive rigid while being a Mexican in Missouri! No beuno.

    • And you base that accusation on what exactly? A person with a Hispanic name getting arrest for actually having illegal drugs in her vehicle?

      • based upon the excuess to pull them over. sorry but mo doesnt need so many officers if they have time and resources to stop anyone for driving while rigid

    • Regardless of the persons nationality or citizenship cannabis prohibition is just plain stupid. Data from the Center for Disease Control proves Beyond doubt that cannabis is far safer to consume alcoholic beverages or tobacco products and based on that fact alone cannabis should be completely legal.

      • Who needs stinkin’ facts? Certainly not peabrain prohibitionist LOSERS!

      • Ben,

YOu need to do better research on your facts. smoking cannabis cause the same lung damage as smoking tobacco – it impairs your bronchioles filling them with gunk. CDC has no such published article if so please post here. Cannabis impairs brain development in kids below the age of 21 and can lead to higher incidence of schizophrenia google that one.

Cannabis is not harmless and is highly addictive just like tobacco. Put that in your proverbial pipe and smoke it.

  • those are Dodge Dakota tail lights y’all

  • It is common for out of staters to get tickets. I have been driving for 54 years with a CA license and the only two tickets I received were from out of state, both in Oregon. The hurtful part was a car with an Oregon license plate passed me and I got the ticket for speeding. I questioned the officer about that decision and he did not bend. He knew I would not come back to Oregon to fight the citation.

  • Maybe folks should check out the Gonzo Bag. Humboldt product. They work!

  • whoever thought is was a good idea to send a non Caucasian sitting rigid through missouri is an amateur

  • I have friends in Missouri. While visiting a couple of years ago, the Anti Marijuana folks were campaigning. They fully believe that Reefer Madness is a factual Documentary, Mailed out post cards with “That 98% of the traffic fatalities are due to “stoned drivers” not drunks” slogans. That state don’t play nice.

  • Thats still a cool $500k in any of those bible belt states or anywheres south on the chitlin circuit..
Unfortunately thats still a real big boy prison bid down yonder too.
Those cops anwgere east of here just lick their chops when they see california plates this time of year. El hefes gonna choke on his chorizo and eggs for not sending a couple proper (not so rigid) escorts along with that load.
Eastbound and down good buddy, —
    – bandit out

    • More than $4K a bow? You need to get out more Lisa. Maybe, maybe $2K if you find a sucker around St Louis. Its all good clean fun until you’re sitting in a MO lockup taking a crap in a bucket in front of everyone, then it just plain sucks.

    • “Those cops anwgere east of here just lick their chops when they see california plates this time of year.”
Exactly! Maybe Kym will update with past articles that confirm this. We’ll see.

    • See my comment to shak!!!

  • Pulled over in Missouri for DWL (Driving While Latina). Quelle surprise!

    • The other guy arrested about the same time was Caucasian looking. He must have been arrested for DWW (Driving While White.) Is there no end to thinking inside the rut?

  • Eldon G. Whitehead

Many, many KUDOS to this Missouri State Police Officer. Glad that he was observant and paying attention. For me, anyone caught transporting illegal drugs OF ANY KIND should be caught and spend a few years in the clink. I, for one, am against this stuff and I’ll turn in anyone and everyone that I know that is doing this type of crap. [edit]

    • Why you wanna snitch on my pa! He can afford his meds from Mexico or he can buy in US and eat cat food! Shame on you for want’n to snitch out a fine man just for being old. Viagra ain’t cheap!

  • You can take the documented out of the sanctuary but you can’t take the sanctuary out of the state.
How’s that ‘sanctuary’ working for ya now?
    #FIXimmigrationLAWS!!

    • did you do any research on their status? both her and her mom are US citizens. Silvia the passenger is white.

    • The entire immigration issue is just an obvious smoke screen. The large banks and corporations of this nation have control of both political parties and have systematically disassembled the manufacturing sector in America that once lead the entire planet. They have gifted our American jobs to the slave labor centers in China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saipan, Mexico and the list goes on and on. You can blame illegal immigrants for job loss in this country if you want, but they are not taking the jobs we used to have, the jobs we used to have are already long gone, moved overseas en masse!!!!! This was a calculated deliberate action by US corporations like Walmart to massively increase their profit margins and has completely destroyed our manufacturing base in the United States. Until we get the corporations and corporate money out of our government we will never be truly free again.

      • “Until we get the corporations and corporate money out of our government we will never be truly free again.”
        I couldn’t agree more!!
I do believe that’s one of the main objectives of the new administration. Hang in there!

  • Translation “paranoid posture” lmao

  • The rest of the caravan made it through OK.

    • That should be a huge consolation to the two people from Humboldt siting in a Missouri jail.

“The Patrol participated in an interdiction project this week on I-70 resulting in 25 felony arrests and 33 misdemeanor arrests. There were 8 seizures that included 2.2 pounds of cocaine, 12 pounds of methamphetamine, and 234 pounds of marijuana.”

      Suckerzzzzzzzz.

    • Yeah, they were probably the decoy.

  • The chemical scents in “dryer sheets” can penetrate the bag and taint your herb. Seen it happen. Mediocre!

  • A recently disbarred lawyer could get the rigid probable cause thrown out

  • They don’t call Missouri “Misery” for nothing!

  • illegal re entry, unlike humboldt that shits a federal felony in the rest of the country

  • Cannabis prohibition criminalizes people for selecting a product that is safer. Cannabis prohibition is a ridiculous waste of police, court resources and taxpayer funds!! The madness is over! Legalize!!!

    The FBI estimates up to:

100 BILLION a year is spent on “black market” recreational cannabis in the USA and all that money goes to “criminals” and drug cartels instead of legitimate business with regulation and taxation.

30 BILLION is lost annually in potential tax revenue.

15 BILLION a year is spent enforcing draconian cannabis laws that make no sense and destroy people’s lives daily.

Data from the Center for Disease Control proves beyond doubt that cannabis is much safer to consume than booze or tobacco!!

The madness is over!!! Legalize, regulate and TAX recreational cannabis!

    • All somewhat true, if disingenuous, but the same can be said for murder, pedophilia, extortion, gambling, etc. A society judges what harms it and how much effort will be spent it holding which particular evils at bay. And when the cost is too great or too ineffective.

I see a world of routine pot use as a dangerous thing. It creates people impaired in their work and personal lives. And worse, unlike most who recognize alcohol as impairing, even if they indulge, pot users seem to be unaware of their impairment. Pot takes so long to leave the system that even a person who uses it a few times a week is never unimpaired. It take months to regain clear thinking or at least as clear thinking as nature gave them. And if it is suggested otherwise, they get angry. They do rely on being soothed when they do screw up so that it’s a vicious cycle of screw up, sooth and screw up again. It becomes an avalanche of small messes triggering a general catastrophe. Society will be an increased tangle of more defective manufacturing, medical practice, bad repairs, driving failures, poor schooling, etc. A nation of 3rd raters in competition with first raters. Never instantly fatally so but so gradually becoming less they never notice.

However, once there is a critical mass of users, the rest of the population can’t effectively prohibit it. It best turn its attention into surviving it. So pot should be legal and the ramifications dealt with. At least the music will be more plentiful.

  • Pretty sure that’s a dodge Dakota lol

  • Driving pounds across the country in a Toyota Tacoma with CA plates and a Tonneu cover is really stupid. I’m surprised they made it all the way to Missouri.

    • They did not have a tonneau cover. The non related arrest of a man with Dodge Dakota had a tonneau cover. If that makes any difference.
