[UPDATE 6:05 p.m.] Structure Fire With Explosion Across From School in McKinleyville; One Injured
A little after 2 p.m., an explosion occurred in the 1200 block of East Bates Road across from the Morris Elementary School, according to traffic over the scanner. A witness who prefers to be anonymous said he and his partner were nearby, “We heard a small explosion. We heard a lot of yelling.”
They walked around the corner and saw a fire coming from a shipping container in a front yard. “We saw smoke billowing out of the building,” he explained. “A guy appeared. He was kind of burned…He was obviously panicking.”
The witness said that the smoke “was pretty bad” and they were told by another person who had been walking his dog and was helping the injured man that “a meth lab caught on fire.” That is unconfirmed at this time, however.
We’ve requested more information from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department and will update as soon as possible.
