‘Haunted Kinetic Lab of Horrors Serves Up Thrills and Chills’

This is a press release from the Haunted Kinetic Lab of Horrors

Grab your loved ones and prepared to be scared! The 13th annual Haunted Kinetic Lab of Horrors is back the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before Halloween and Halloween night from 7pm until midnight. This fundraiser has been frightening and delighting Humboldt County fans of the Kinetic Grand Championship for over a decade with all proceeds benefiting the Kinetic Sculpture Lab in Arcata.

From January until May each year, the Lab is busy with five Kinetic teams made up of artists and engineers building intricate moving art sculptures on top of human powered machines. Designed to travel over land, sand, water, and mud, these contraptions are typically among the biggest and showiest of the three-day Kinetic Grand Championship each Memorial Day weekend. Each team fundraises separately through sponsorships and donations to build and race every year. The Haunted Kinetic Lab of Horrors, typically built in about a months’ time, brings in the revenue to pay rent and expenses for the building each year.

Sculptures from past races have been hoisted up to the rafters creating an eerie vibe even when it’s not Halloween. Don’t expect cheap scares typical of your everyday haunted house. The Haunted Lab of Horrors is conceived and built by artists who, in the spirit of the Kinetic Grand Championship, build each prop and mechanism by hand, which makes it creative, fun, and incredibly entertaining. What you can expect is tour guides bringing groups of 4-6 patrons through the lab at a time, drawing attention to the creepiest, scariest corners of the lab. It’s an elaborate production with approximately 10 synchronized ‘stages’ designed to stimulate and terrify even the bravest of souls. Lighting, sound effects, special effects, and dark humor all add to the experience.

Live music by The Dead Drops will be heard nightly and a food truck by La Bonita will be parked out front creating a vibrant scene for those waiting in line. Tickets are available at the gate for $12, and it is recommended for those 13 years and older. The Haunted Kinetic Lab of Horrors will be open from 7 until midnight on Friday, October 26, Saturday, October 27, Sunday, October 28 and Wednesday, October 31 and is located at the end of 8th Street (at M Street) in Arcata’s Creamery District.
