Humboldt County’s First Accessory Dwelling Unit Fair to Take Place on September 21, 22
This is a press release from the City of Arcata:
Arcata, CA – The City of Arcata is pleased to be participating in Humboldt County’s first Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Fair in partnership with the City of Eureka, Humboldt County, the Redwood Economic Development Commission and Planwest Partners.
The goal of the ADU Fair is to help stimulate the construction of new ADU housing units in Humboldt County in 2019. The City of Arcata, the City of Eureka and Humboldt County governments are all committed to making the ADU permitting process as easy as possible by providing education and outreach opportunities for property owners, starting with this Fair.
An ADU is a small house or housing unit that is secondary or “accessory” to a primary unit. Some examples of ADU’s are backyard cottages, basement apartments, carriage houses, attached in-law suites, garden suites, granny cottages, mother-in-law flats, secondary units, tiny houses that include a foundation and garage apartments.
ADU Fair attendees will have the opportunity to learn everything about financing, permitting, constructing and managing an ADU. Plus, City and County representatives will be on hand to discuss building opportunities and constraints with property owners pertaining to their specific properties.
The Fair will consist of a Vendor Hall with experts including contractors, solar and green building experts, engineers and architects, realtors and lending institutions. A Workshop Series will also provide a wide-range of information for participants including question-and-answer sessions with a range of experts, technical information and how-to guides.
In addition, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy food, libations and fun activities for kids including a bounce house.
The ADU Fair is a free two-day event taking place on Friday, September 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, September 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Redwood Acres, located at 3750 Harris Street in Eureka.

Really? Like people never heard of mother-in-law units before? Or a trailer in the side yard? It’s one of the few hedges against homelessness, as well as plain old practical. More Treehouses please!
Just dont call it a hoop house.
Be sure to get your permits!
I’m so glad this fair is happening, I’m planning on buying a tiny house on wheels and I’ll be able to make sure it’s up to code & lawful for free… reading the codes & laws is very confusing… Federal, State & County regulations.
