Fatal Accident on Hwy 299

On 09/09/2018 at approximately 11:45 PM California Highway Patrol Dispatch received a call of a vehicle collision involving injuries on SR-299 west of Hawkins Bar. [Jose Gallardo] was driving [a 1993 Toyota 4Runner] eastbound on SR-299 at an unknown speed. Due to his level of intoxication, [Gallardo] was unable to maintain control of [the 4Runner]. [It] left the roadway and collided with the embankment causing it to overturn. At the time of the collision, there were six passengers in [the vehicle]. Several of the passengers were not wearing passenger restraints and received major to minor injuries. One passenger succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The identity of the deceased passenger is pending identification and next of kin notification by the Trinity County Sheriff’s Department. Alcohol appears to be a factor in this collision. [Gallardo] was arrested at the scene, treated by medical personnel, and booked into the Trinity County Jail.
