Press release from Redwood National and State Parks:

Beginning Sunday evening at 6 p.m., Sept. 9, Redwood National and State Parks’ Davison Road, the dirt access road to Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon, will be closed to all traffic four days a week through Oct. 11. A major road improvement project is occurring for Davison Road and a full shut down is necessary to ensure safety for visitors and workers.

During the closure, Gold Bluffs Beach Campground and the Fern Canyon day use parking lot will also be closed. The road, campground and day use area will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Campers with reservations for Thursday nights will not be able to check in until after 5 p.m. While crews will take advantage of typically clear autumn weather to complete the work, rain delays may extend the length of this project.

The Streelow Creek hiking and biking trail will be open to Davison Road and back, but there will be no access further to Fern Canyon.

Gold Bluffs Beach Campground and the Fern Canyon area are very popular destinations for park visitors, and steadily increasing in popularity every year. Davison Road, an historic narrow dirt road that winds nine miles west over steep, winding terrain from Hwy. 101 and the Elk Meadow day use area to the sea, was never originally designed for the heavy use it now encounters annually. The closure will allow for safe operation of dump trucks and heavy equipment for grading, graveling and resurfacing work without endangering other travelers.

You can always hike in from the visitors center and back along Minors Creek. A bit of a walk but not a hard one.

I was thinking that too, during the closure would be the perfect time to enjoy Fern Canyon without all the obnoxious tourists.

Or is that Miners Ridge? I think it’s to Miners Ridge. James Irvine Trail to Fern Canyon.
