The Kerlin Fire grew 253 acres in the last 24 hours to reach 1228. InciWeb is currently reporting that the fire is 0% contained.

Early this morning, the Northern California Incident Management Team 2 took command of the Kerlin Fire. There are just under 300 personnel working the fire. Three helicopters are assigned to the blaze and air tankers are being brought in as needed.

The Plan:

According to a press release this morning from the Shasta-Trinity National Forest,

Crews worked yesterday to prioritize line building on the eastern side of the fire, and were largely able to hold it directly on its active edge (Forest Roads 3N35 and west of 3N44) through the night. The fire did push over the line in several places, but crews were able to pick up those slopovers promptly. Firefighters have also been working on dozer lines behind the sawmill, utilizing County Road 311 and the Kerlin Creek Road to create contingency lines should the fire push to the east/northeast today. On the southern edge of the fire, crews held the line directly along the ridgetop and Forest Road 3N44. Firefighters will look today for opportunities to catch the fire on ridgetops and roads on the northern and western edges of the fire.

There is a public meeting at 6 p.m. tonight at the Hyampom Volunteer Fire Department.

The Weather:

The temperatures will be in the low nineties today. The press release from the Shasta-Trinity National Forest stated, “Weather today is predicted to remain warm and dry, with prevalent seasonal winds affecting fire behavior. The smoke inversion is expected to lift a bit earlier today due to decreased moisture recovery overnight, and gusty winds are expected, especially in drainages.”

Staff at the Redding Air Tanker Base broke another record today. While pumping retardant in aircraft headed for the Kerlin Fire, they reached the two million gallon mark of pumped fire retardant. Kudos to all the staff there for the tremendous effort put out this year.

Trinity County Department of Transportation tweeted a list of road closures late yesterday. This includes the roads closed because of the Delta Fire which spread into Trinity County yesterday. (Note: where the phrase “residence only” is used, we believe “residents only” was meant.)
