North Coast People’s Alliance Endorses Sofia Pereira

Arcata Mayor and City Councilmember Sofia Pereira has won the North Coast People’s Alliance endorsement for a second term on the City Council.

“We’ve been very impressed with Sofia’s dedication in helping others engage in local government as well as her work on trails, zero waste and more,” said Carrie Peyton-Dahlberg, vice chair of the NCPA’s Steering Committee. “Arcata will be well-served during her second term.”

Peyton-Dahlberg added that NCPA is inviting volunteers to make phone calls for Pereira and other NCPA-endorsed candidates and causes at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 and at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, at the Labor Temple, 840 E. St., Eureka. Callers must bring cell phones, and bringing laptops or tablets is strongly encouraged but not required.

Pereira was elected to the Arcata City Council in 2014, after serving as a legislative analyst for the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services and as a field representative for then-Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro.

During her first term, Councilmember Pereira worked with community partners to make the Plaza more family friendly, ensure that roads were repaired, expand the city trail system, and advance the city’s first zero waste action plan.

Now, Pereira said, “My top priorities are to address a housing shortage that’s making Arcata schools and our community out of reach for too many families and working people. I will advance new housing projects for all income levels and the infill development we need that promotes alternative modes of transportation and mixed use.”

She is also calling for Arcata to directly face the threat of sea level rise and other natural disasters, while aggressively reducing dependence on fossil fuels and fighting climate change. And she encourages strong community connections.

“We must work with our neighbors and Humboldt State University to welcome our new residents of all backgrounds, and to make Arcata a safe and inclusive community for our students and residents,” Pereira said.

In addition to her City Council duties, Pereira continues to support civic engagement across the country as a nonprofit director for a national women’s leadership organization. Voters can learn more on her website, www.sofiapereira.org.

The North Coast People’s Alliance organizes for social justice, economic justice and environmental justice, and works to help everyday people become more involved in their civic institutions. It invites volunteers to phone bank in support of numerous NCPA-endorsed candidates and issues on the second and fourth Monday of each month, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and from 1-4 p.m. on every Saturday through election day, all at the Labor Temple, 840 E St., Eureka. Participants must bring their phones, and are encouraged to also bring laptops or tablets.
