The Kerlin Fire which was discovered around 3 p.m. has now chewed through 40 acres, according to Cal Fire. Aircraft have pulled back off the fire as it is too dark for them to fight.

The fire is burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest just east over the line from Humboldt County.

UPDATE 8:35 p.m.: According to Carol Underwood Underhill, spokesperson for Shasta-Trinity National Forest, there are no structures threatened. “It was spotting but not moving too fast,” she said. “There is retardant around about 90% of the fire.”

Several engines and a dozer are fighting the fire now and more resources are expected, she said.

The cause is under investigation.
