A new fire started south of Kelseyville today. According to a Cal Fire tweet a few minutes after 3 p.m., “Firefighters are battling a 20 acre fire off Kelsey Creek Rd & Conklin Ln, Kelseyville (Lake County). Evacuations in progress for Kelsey Creek Dr and Carder Rd.”

The Sheriff said the evacuations are only advisories when he posted this update on Facebook a few minutes before 3 p.m.

Although this is contradictory, we believe but have been unable to confirm that the Sheriff’s Facebook post is the most accurate. Scanner traffic indicates that some resources are being sent back which is unlikely if structures are threatened.

UPDATE 3:28 p.m.: Lake County Sheriff’s Nixle update states, “Advisory Evacuation for one mile out from the South of intersection of Kelsey Creek Drive and Wight Way. Please watch out for emergency vehicles in the area and drive safely.”

UPDATE 4:16 p.m.: According to a Lake County Sheriff’s Nixle update about a half hour ago, “Forward progress of the fire has been stopped.  Residents should continue to remain vigilant as there continue to be windy conditions that could cause the fire activity to become unpredictable.”

Is this the same fire as yesterday or a new fire all together today? Is there now 4 fires burning around Clearlake?

Hope everyone is safe!

I was passing the farm field when the fire was only a few hundred yards across. I continued down the road to look for someone at a farmhouse. Already, there were several of the local gentry making way to the scene. I felt reasonably certain they were calling it in. I went to the end of the road at Desafinado vineyard and came north again. In those intervening minutes, the fire had gone from 2-foot flames to 8-feet or more – and ripping.

One shed structure which was being framed-up was already fully involved. Thankfully, most everything else was open field and the prevailing wind tracked from south-east to north-west – more or less. More locals were running down the street with only hand tools – a sure sign of injuries in the making. I pulled over and a lady had me move my car out of the way. Sure enough, a Huey made a swift low circle, hit his flare and dropped maybe 8 strike team guys. They split into two teams of four. Seconds later, ground response was rolling down Kelsey Spring Road. Now I know why the lady had me park out of the way.

I doubt as if current events compare for ugly with last centuries series of wars, financial collapses, political mud slinging, civil unrest and fear mongering. As far as can be seen, the only difference is that it is so much easier to report opinions along with the internet increasing the noise levels.

In fact I suspect that the last few years will end up being the good ol’ days fairly soon.
