[UPDATE 10 p.m.] AT&T Fiber Outage Continues

AT&TAT&T customers report that internet services are down from areas as far south as Miranda and as far north as McKinleyville in Humboldt County. The first reports indicate the outage started about 9:20 a.m.

Senator Mike McGuire tweeted about 4 p.m., “Just got off the phone with @ATT reps: @ATT crews are out in the field and working the fiber outage in #Humboldt. There is no word on a cause, they’re working to determine how many customers are impacted and there is no estimated time for service restoration.”

UPDATE 8:13 p.m.: According to a tweet by Senator Mike McGuire around 8 p.m., “@ATT crews remain on scene of a fiber cut which has impacted service in #Humboldt County. Crews are working hard to get service restored later this evening.”

UPDATE 10 p.m.: Two readers let us know that their AT&T service is back up and running.

Maybe when it comes back on they’ll have fixed whatever it is that has had us running at copper wire speeds all summer.

Elaborate on that? How would you know the difference between a company purposefully throttling data so the next generation will be demanded by the public. Can the public find out about private companies equipment on public property?

AT&T tech blew the whistle on the patch in San Francisco. Years ago. Government and corporations are somewhat like political parties. Mostly theatre in public, in private, pretty close partners.

Did the ping test a few years ago, at&t download was in the 700 Kb range. Couldn’t believe how bad it was. I’m sure its improved.

That is how bad Wave Cable in Garberville/Redway/Benbow is… 800kb with 20-50% packet loss…

There will be another outage in the not too distant future again because there is a tree (Actually two trees in the virtually same location) across a fiber line near Phillipsville. Mile marker 3.16 (Just north of Phillipsville before the road that has no name marked) on the Avenue of the Giants. I have told AT&T workers but they don’t care. I also told Caltrans and they didn’t seem to care either.

The response of AT&T when I reported something similar is that they don’t do tree trimming. However they will come and put the line back up after it comes down. It looks pretty stupid a policy to me but there you are. I will say that the lines must be strong because 2 years later the same tree is being held up by the tightly strained lines.

Make sure your complaint is filed and on record. Liability is a something that teaches corporations to PAY attention.

It’s out again in Mckinleyville. Just tried to access internet at 7:50 so outage may have occurred earlier. Was on last night at 9:15.
