Draper City Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett

The name of the firefighter who died yesterday has been released. Draper City Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett, age 42. He leaves behind a wife and son.

According to the Draper City Fire Department Facebook page,

Battalion Chief Matt Burchett was injured last night while working on the Mendocino fire near the community of Pillsbury, California. Advanced life support care was given immediately by crews on site. Within 40 minutes, Matt was airlifted by a Medevac helicopter to the Ukiah Valley Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

For any line-of-duty deaths there is always an investigation. Cal Fire has a Serious Accident Review Team that will be conducting the investigation.

…Draper City’s Fire Chief Clint Smith is out of the country and he has given us his statement about this tragic event

“Draper City Fire Department has no words to describe the depth of sorrow we are feeling upon learning of the death of Battalion Chief Matt Burchett while assisting with the devastating California Wildfires. Matt is a true hero who has given the ultimate sacrifice while serving others. Matt is a strong leader and experienced wildland firefighter who always put the safety and needs of his subordinates first, but most of all, Matt was a devoted husband and loving father. His family was his world. We are grateful to those fellow firefighters that were with Matt and for the immediate aid they were able to render. We pray for all firefighters, friend and family affected by this tragic loss. This event has rocked our small department to its very core but we will work to honor Matt’s legacy and sacrifice and care for his family.”

As a retired Volunteer Fireman from the Communities of Rio Dell & Scotia, CA., I, too mourn the death of this Fire Fighter. Fire fighting is a very real and dangerous job and the Fire Fighters do everything they can to protect lives, resources and everything else within their powers. Anytime we lose a Fire Fighter like this, we all lose a part of ourselves. My most sincere Condolences goes out to his Wife and Children, the Community that he served with and to all other Firemen & Women who gives their all at times to help others in distress and need. May He Forever Rest In Peace.

So, so sad. What a kind-looking man. There are no words to express our indebtedness to him, his family, friends and all of the firefighters who are helping with these Northern California fires. What a tragic loss for all!
