Coast Guard, Local Partners to Participate in ‘Eureka Coast Guard City Days’

WHO: Personnel from Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay, Eureka Police and Fire Department, Eureka Chamber of Commerce and Coast Guard Station Humboldt Bay.

WHAT: Scheduled to hold three events: an interagency softball game and BBQ, a ceremony to dedicate the F Street Plaza in honor of the 18th anniversary of Eureka becoming the nation’s second Coast Guard City and Coast Guard Station Humboldt Bay’s annual open house.

WHEN: The softball game and BBQ are scheduled for Friday at noon. The plaza dedication is scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday. Station Humboldt Bay’s open house is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., August 11.

WHERE: The softball game and BBQ will be held at Kennedy Fields, Eureka (Baseball fields next to National Guard Armory and Sequoia Park Zoo). The plaza dedication will be held at F Street Plaza in Eureka. The Station Humboldt Bay open house will be held at 200 New Navy Base Road in Samoa.

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay and local partners are scheduled to participate in Coast Guard City Days events in celebration of the 18th anniversary of Eureka becoming the nation’s second official Coast Guard City.

The events include an interagency softball game and BBQ, a ceremony to dedicate the F Street Plaza in honor of the 18th anniversary of Eureka becoming the nation’s second Coast Guard City and Coast Guard Station Humboldt Bay’s annual open house.

The softball game is a show of good will and friendly competition between the local police and fire departments and the Coast Guard. The game fosters interagency relations and furthers training opportunities between the organizations.

The plaza dedication ceremony will officially rename F Street Plaza to Coast Guard Plaza. Eureka Main Street has been working with the local Coast Guard and City of Eureka to rename the plaza in honor of the partnerships between the organizations. New signs will be posted on 1st Street and F Street at the entrance to the plaza.

Coast Guard Station Humboldt Bay welcomes the public and the media to its annual open house. All are invited to visit the facility and meet the station crew. Guests will be able to tour the historic building and climb aboard rescue boats. Boat crews will be available to discuss their missions, general boating safety and discuss how the Coast Guard renders assistance to mariners operating off California’s northern coast.

Members of partner agencies will also be available for guests to meet including members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Crescent City Flotilla, local police and fire departments and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“The Coast Guard has been located on the North Spit since the 1800’s, providing assistance to the maritime community,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Ronald McCready, Station Humboldt Bay’s officer in charge. “The open house provides the public an excellent opportunity to come out and see the historic building and meet the men and women of today’s Coast Guard.”
