‘Farm to School Grant Will Enhance Student Access To Local Foods,’ Says HCOE

This is a press release from the Humboldt County Office of Education:

Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE)Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE), Nutrition Programs and Services recently received a Farm to School Grant totaling over 97,000 dollars from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Humboldt County was one of 14 out of 73 awardees within the western region of the U.S. to receive this competitive grant and one of only four awards in California.

The USDA provides funding for planning grants, training grants, and implementation grants. HCOE was the only implementation grant that received funding in California. Funding will help bring nutritious, local foods into schools and create new economic development opportunities for famers.

The goal of the project is to develop a comprehensive Farm to School program in the after school setting that increases low-income student access to fresh fruits and vegetables and improves their food and agricultural literacy. The Harvest of the Month (HOTM) program is a proven foundation for which new efforts will stem. Nutrition Programs and Services plans is to enhance existing HOTM culinary activities and tie in hands-on gardening, experiential field trip opportunities, and local procurement for supper meals.

Local elementary school sites that this grant will benefit include Alice Birney, Grant, Lafayette, Washington, Peninsula, and Pine Hill. Partnerships for the field trip component of the project will include North Coast Growers Association and Humboldt Hydro Farms.

“We are extremely honored and excited to be a recipient of this competitive funding and look forward to expanding our current Farm to School efforts in the after school setting,” states Erin Derden-Little, Farm to School Coordinator, Nutrition Programs and Services.

These grants have proven to produce positive outcomes for schools and communities alike by connecting people to their food, which builds stronger ties to community agriculture.

How are schools chosen to participate? And why not ALL schools?

I know, right? At least it’s a good start though. You always wonder where that money actually goes. Why not just encourage farmers near schools to bring their produce in and sell to the school instead of the school going and buying the old wilting stuff at Safeway etc?

How about school to farms? Then students can learn how to produce food for themselves and school? Just a thought “study nature, not books”.

Don’t wait for applause from me. Only the spineless and feeble minds buy bribes, err, grants, then publish their ‘good fortune’ hand-out, and stand around wallowing in self-aggrandizement -looking dumber than a door knob.

Grants eliminate check and balance. And in the current expired @System@ where school districts squirrel the abundant, opulent tax theft money away in account’s never to be heard from again, it’s just never enough, and never will be for gluttonoous hogs feeding at the trough of the public money supply.

People can’t be that dumb, to think a “Grant” somehow isn’t coming off the backs of you and me /us/we -the laborers. Label it grant, label it a gift, label it numbers added to a balance sheet that came from out of nowhere, but at least the robber barons could do is provide some lube.

Education System Runs on Lies. Doesn’t matter what form of economy’s money the ‘wise ones’ continue to throw at whatever their promotion de jure is – IT WILL FAIL. This is a no-brainer, been there/done that, no matter the number of weak-kneed kling-ons gravitating w/the collective group think . . .a problem can not be solved thinking the same way that caused the problem. -Einstein.

“Overall, across all grades, we found that implementing any SIG-funded model had no significant impacts on math or reading test scores, high school graduation, or college enrollment.” Former Education Secretary Arne Duncan says U.S. education system “not top10 in anything.”
