Today, a fire started about 10:45 a.m. on the South Jetty of the Humboldt Bay, according to the scanner and the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

Cal Fire’s chopper 102 is battling the blaze.

This screengrab of an image from Flight Tracker shows where Copter 102 from Cal Fire has repeatedly circled an area attempting to put out the flames.

We’ll update with more information when we receive it.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 12:39 p.m.: According to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Paul Savona, the fire is currently about three acres. Three engines from multiple volunteer fire departments are on scene–Loleta, Fortuna, and Ferndale. One dozer and the Cal Fire helicopter is also fighting the fire.

“It is burning in beach grass,” he explained. “And, it is currently contained on the beach….I don’t believe it will get much bigger.”

There is no place without homeless encampments. The homeless city that was there is gone but there are scattered groups everywhere. Not that that means that was the cause.

Sure was black smoke for just a grass fire.

The smoke must’ve gotten darker from the burnt Marbled Murrelet eggs.

The smoke must’ve gotten darker from the burnt Snowy Plover eggs.

Only kidding.

There was a pattern of fires out there last year.

IMHO guess 1: Somebody is burning European Beach grass out to
provide enhanced Snowy Plover nesting territory.

IMHO guess 2: Sparks from a leftover campfire.

IMHO guess 3. We have a fire bug who enjoys starting fires. There were several fires that never really took off last year on the Hikshari Trail.
