73-Year-Old Man Received Major Injuries After Being Struck on Samoa Blvd
Press Release from the Arcata Police Department:
On 07/19/2018, at approximately 1955 hrs, the Arcata Police Department responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision at the intersection of Samoa Blvd and I Street in Arcata.
A 2008 gold Toyota RAV 4 SUV, driven by Roxana Wilkinson of Arcata, was travelling southbound on Samoa Blvd (State Highway 255) at or near the speed limit. The vehicle struck Earl Carey, 73 of Arcata, as he was crossing Samoa Blvd, resulting in major injuries.
This section of southbound Samoa Blvd faces directly west and Ms. Wilkinson’s vison was impacted by the setting sun which obscured her view of Mr. Carey who was entering the cross walk on the north side of the street.
Mr. Carey was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding where he remains in stable condition.
Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this collision.
The Arcata Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the collision to please contact the Arcata Police Department at (707)822-2428.

Maybe time for a flashing light when a pedestrian wants to cross.
Maybe, that would get the attention of some “people” before they hit someone!!!!
Well at least it was the sun, most I can bet are distracted drivers on their damn phones…. That spot is bad at that time of day…. A light up cross walk should be put in there….
Don’t enter a crosswalk just because the sign says so, or marked as such. Look first. You may be right, but it’s gonna hurt.
It hurts to be right
There always needs to be a mutual respect and awareness by both the pedestrian and the motorist. Doesn’t work any other way.
That sucks – I hope he has a full recovery. Too bad the old guy didn’t have the common sense enough to know that the lines of a crosswalk are not going to shield him from an oncoming vehicle driving west into the sunset. I’ve been on Samoa Blvd. during sunset and that sun blinded me to the point that I had to kind of pull over to the side and slow way down. The dirty windshield didn’t help either.
Sorry to hear you had to slow down.
There should be a law against having to slow down while driving.
Hey Dobbs maybe now at least you will be able to understand him!
I really do hope the gentleman makes a full and speedy recovery ❣️
This is slightly off topic for this particular thread, but I’m wondering why I don’t see any mention of Marci Kitchen’s LOONG awaited trial is postponed yet AGAIN!!!???
I don’t have the resources to cover everything.
No worries just curious!!!
I sure hope Mr. Carey makes a full recovery from his injuries. It gets harder to heal from our injuries as we grow older. Hopefully he has a good support system to help him get through this.

Let’s face it, we’re not used to the sun being out in Eureka/Arcata. It requires a different mind set.
Tinted windows are a hazard to pedestrians. Can’t divine the driver’s thoughts…eye contact needed.
If you’re not in a car, you are not a whole person and fair game for motorists.
Motorists in Humboldt despise pedestrians. I am nearly killed at least once a week in a crosswalk. I walk everywhere and have seen this for more than fifteen years. EPD does nothing. I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen the coppers pull anyone over for traffic violations.
A giant, shiny pickup driver believes they are invincible and god-like. They do not care about anyone but themselves. Look at the number of drivers who eat while driving. I have seen drivers with their eyes closed driving! Putting on makeup, turning yelling at kids in the back seat. On and on. And if they nearly hit you, and you yell at them, they exclaim “I didn’t see you!” like it’s a badge of honor.
This poor gentleman. I know how he feels. Victimized by industrialism and the drivers who wield their steel weapons and use “lost him in the sun” as an excuse.
I have a 73 yr oldish friend in Arcata with that last name..’Earl’ doesn’t go by ‘Steve’ does he? 🙁
Yeah, it was Honeydew Steve Carey. Commenter on LoCO said that.
Your windshield doesn’t look too dirty. Then when that low-angled direct evening sun hits it you can completely lose your vision. It’s scary. You don’t want to full-stop in the middle of Samoa because people behind you might plow into you. It’s possible there’s no blame here, just a tragic event involving humans. ps- I never trust cars to stop. Many reasons they might screw up. Pedestrians beware!
Don’t get me wrong, I know the sun can be blinding, even on a motorcycle with no windshield and my visor up. And I feel for both parties, not wanting to be either of them. But it can be argued that the driver is at fault if her windshield was the slightest bit dirty causing glare from the sun. A driver is supposed to be in control of their vehicle at ALL times. That includes a dirty windshield. Example: few years back a women lost control of her car, swerved into oncoming traffic, killed a local politician. Her fault. Not in control. People know far too little about their multi ton steel death machines they are wieldilg.
50 years ago you could walk across any road in California and people would stop for you. That was a HUGE difference from the East coast where pedestrians never have the right of way! It’s more like the rat race East coast here, every day. That sucks.
This happened last year at the same intersection. I came after the fact that day. I was there when it happened this time. I heard the screech of tires and the thudding of the collision and I looked over expecting a fender bender. I unexpectedly saw an old man face down and unconscious. Glad to hear he’s stable, I didn’t think he was going to survive.
Hmmm, that is an unprotected intersection (no lights, no stop signs). Seems like as a ped, you would look to see if any vehicles traveling the legal limit were too close for you to get across safely before stepping off the curb. Even without the sun, that just makes sense to me.
You take your life in your hands when you cross an intersection without controls. I would never do so unless I knew I could get across safely without relying on someone else to see me. JMO.
It’s like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Maybe he thought he was Don Quixote slaying a dragon.
