[UPDATE 1:15 p.m.] Fire on M Street in Arcata
UPDATE 12:32 p.m.: According to the scanner, there may be a need to evacuate campers if there are any.
UPDATE 12:33 p.m.: Law enforcement is closing down Alliance Road in the area, according to scanner traffic. Please avoid it.
UPDATE 12:39 p.m.: Firefighter getting into the green area where the fire is burning.
UPDATE 12:44 p.m.: This is next to an old mill site. Firefighters are getting a handle on the fire and Alliance may reopen soon, according to our photographer Mark McKenna who is on the scene. UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: According to scanner traffic, Alliance Road is reopening. The fire burned in a field near the green belt.UPDATE 12:58 p.m.: Firefighters are spraying down the smouldering field at the edge of the treeline. [Video by Mark McKenna]
UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: According to Arcata Fire Chief Justin McDonald, this was initially called in as a debris fire. Then it was upgraded to a vegetation fire. Personnel were tied up in a medical call so other agencies were called. The fire didn’t get through the green belt where there were three homeless camps. But no structures were burned and there were no injuries.
