[UPDATE 11:27 a.m.] Gas Leak Forces Shut Down of Waterfront Drive in Eureka Between Commercial and C Streets
A gas leak that was reported a little after 9 a.m. today has shut down traffic on Waterfront Drive between Commercial and C Streets in Eureka.
We’ve contacted PG&E and requested more information.
UPDATE: 9:49 a.m.: According to PG&E spokesperson Deanna Contreras, “Construction crews, not with PG&E, working with a mini excavator hit a gas line… The 2” plastic line was struck at approximately 9:00 am….PG&E is working with firefighters and police to keep the area safe by closing down both directions of Waterfront until the flow of gas is stopped.”
Contreras said about 9:40 a.m., “Right now gas is still flowing.” She explained that PG&E was working on capping the line and that was expected to happen by around 10:15 a.m. However, the road might be impacted during repairs…Crews are working as safely and quickly as possible.”
No customers have lost gas service so far, she said. However, she added, “During the repairs, some customers may need to be turned off.”
Contreras said, “We’re still looking to see if the lines were properly marked.” She said, “[T]his is a good reminder for residents in Humboldt County to call 811 or visit usanorth811.org before doing any construction projects or digging projects that require moving of the earth.”
UPDATE 11:27 a.m.: Contreras said, “Crews safely stopped the flow of gas at 10:10 am. No customers will be impacted during the repairs today.”

PLASTIC gas line?
I suppose that was the problem…
On the other hand, if it had been metal it might have sparked and that would be its own problem, wouldn’t it?
Likely if it was metal & sparked it would have been CONSIDERABLY worse!!!
Agreed.
Plastic gas line is much safer. A backhoe will yank out a metal gas line just as easily (I’ve watched it happen). And a metal gas line will rust and start leaking.
ALL underground gas is plastic.
Backhoe will rip out steel as well as gas. And steel rusts.
Guessing you haven’t worked in underground utilities much?
Guessing lack of knowledge doesn’t stop many folk from shooting their mouths off.
They’re all plastic.
house lines are, but there is still steel in many areas under the streets.
The issue wasn’t the gas line itself. The problem is that people need to properly mark utilitys Where they actually are not 6.5 feet in the wrong direction.
Call 811 before you dig folks
